newfag to VaM, having asked around i keep getting mixed replies on whether using custom models is possible or not. can you just use whatever model you want on this sandbox or not? even stuff from other games?

If a 3d model of it exists then technically you can import it into vam. It's pretty tedious though. If you are looking for video game characters there are lots of ports people have done over the years.

What do you mean by "custom model"?
Taking plain blender file of some ripped ingame model and running it as is - no, you can't do that. You will have to make the morph, clothes, accessories and textures for it separately. Look up "porting models into VAM" guide(or similarly named) on hub, it should have instructions on how to do it. But there is a good chance that someone already made the girl you trying to port in, and if not - you have a good variety of tools and options to make her using ingame tools.
That being said, VAM does have a tool for loading in Custom Unity Assets, so if you want any prop or environment it is pretty easy.

Not that I know of. With ai vibecoding though anything is possible. Someone recently made an asset importer that should be able to import things such as a vrchat model since that is just a unity file. I'm not sure how much it would let you customize the model though. Such as if it only imports the model as is and doesn't let you take off clothing if the vrchat model has that option. Still worth messing around with.

Don't think so. Usually it's the other way around, people trying to import VAM made stuff into VRchat.
I say if you have enough brains to make/kitbash/tweak and upload avatars to VRchat, you should be able to port them into vam with little problem. VAM uses Genesis 2 from DAZ as a baseline, and the rest is all similar 3d modeling stuff - textures, normals, and so on.

we went from a super computer needing several minutes to render a video of woll smoth eating spaghetti during an acid trip, and now theres real time photorealistic filters overlayed on vidya games-- running on a baseline gaming pc... and all that progress has happened within like 4 years

even if DLSS looks goofy most of the time when you really crank it up, when it actually renders well, its crazy how well it works. technology is advancing too fast. i don't like this :(

Damn, haven't used them in ages...But yeah, they do that. Are you trying to enjoy some catwalk stuff? I think the intended way of doing it is to construct animation sequence yourself and loop it. Something like - idle, idle to walk, walk for a bit, walk to stop, turn, walk again. There should be a few "building blocks" that you can mix and match, make the girl walk in the way you want.
That being said, I think everyone just uses Timeline plugin by Acid Bubbles to animate stuff, I recommend checking it out and learning it's basic functions. It looks complicated as hell, but you don't really need to learn how to do all the shit youself, you can just load in any animated scene that uses it, export animation, load your scene with your girl and apply it. There is a good amount of idles and walking animations on the hub, search around.

Then in VR - fuck, I don't know, about the same as I would get when hanging around in VRchat lobby with some amount of horribly unoptimized avatars. Can't get you the number because I never checked those things. When the horny business gets going, all the blood from my brain gets redirected to the more important(at the time) organs and I kinda just phase out, and my malnourished brain draws all the missing frames better than any slop machine can ever do. But if we talking numbers, I'll say a good constructed non-boated scene with a single girl doing stuff(dancing, usually) runs good enough. Adding more actors, of course, slows thing down a good bit, but it is a rare problem for me, since I prefer one-on-one scenes.
And then I use it outside of VR, like for making fancy screenshots and videos - fps does not matter, as long as I can reliably click on buttons and if response times are not too ass.

Don't know if you guys already know this but pretty much anything can cause low fps. From a light atom, a random CUA to even the hair on your character. Even if all you're going for is screenshots wouldn't hurt to make the experience less ass than it should be. Assuming you haven't already thought and tried this of course.

The absolute god fucking trick to making videos on a shit rig is fairly simple. Use the time scale function. It is neatly hidden within defaul UI, under the button conveniently named "Click for more options". I never bothered to learn what that shit does in any detail, but I do know that it's basicaly makes all the physics prosess way fucking slower and smoother. All those boobs and dicks flying out of control during some intense scene? Set timescale to 10% speed, record that shit in OBS, and then simply speed up the video in post processing accordingly. Shit is like a fucking cheat-code, try experimenting with it.

Oh, I am very much aware of that. I had a lot of those moments - I see a good looking dress, enviroment or a decoration asset, load that shit in and get slapped in the face by abysmal fucking perfomance hit. Rich get richer. I learned to accept it as a part of the business - all assets are equal, but some are more equal than the others, type shiet. I see myself as nothing but a scavenger, combing through a vast desert of models and assets with my big garbage bag, grasped firmly in my claws, knowing what to take and what to leave, and knowhing when to accept defeat and move on.
