that need could be validation, it could be a satisfying sex life, it could be having things bought for them etc.

OP has something in the vein of the need "to have fucked a lot of women" which is somewhat biologically rooted but also comes from insecurity and a need for validation. one partner can't realistically fulfil that so to get into a relationship with a non-polyamorous woman and then realise he has that need is somewhat shitty. it's just like a woman who knows she wants to fuck someone with a big dick and marries a guy with a small one, then asks for an open relationship. that said, if you're in OP's place and find you have that need, presenting your partner with it if it's big enough is more honest than hiding it. but asking for an open relationship to be one-sided is like having your cake and eating it too.
