I usually get enough sleep, just had a bad week, and thought "whatever, I'll sleep like a king on the weekend", then couldn't fall asleep on the weekend. I guess due to a fucked sleep schedule.

However, now for two days in a row, I have a new problem: Thoughts that I'll not be able to fall asleep and sleep well are keeping me awake. Which is fucking retarded and yet it became a real problem.

It started last saturday, but I told myself it wasn't that, it was the sleep schedule, that thoughts of not falling asleep can't reinforce themselves and keep me awake. Then yesterday I went to bed early, was tired, and that literally happened. I literally couldn't fall asleep due to these fears of staying awake because those thoughts would keep me awake.

I feel that this sounds fucking retarded yet became a real problem for me, how do I cope? Sometimes I wish I was a turbonormie with a simpler mind jfl

Can't sleep, either.

this happens to me from time to time. fucking sucks. think about getting good sleep, and then even if i sleep through it, its just not a good enough "i feel rested" kinda sleep. what works for me some of the times in these cases is not sleeping for a day or two (or sleeping for just 2-3 hours). but you got to power through the urge to sleep in the afternoon. also, i have found not listening to music at least some hours before bed (with headphones) has helped me get good sleep in general, along with not smoking after the evening. not gonna tell you to keep off the phone, cuz that doesn't matter at all to me, i normally just get sleepy at my regular time, even (especially) when i am scrolling through something and end up getting tired.

>Thoughts that I'll not be able to fall asleep and sleep well are keeping me awake
i have to go to bed myself soon anon but helping you with your issue long term is more important than missing perfect sleep for me on a single night

first, drink some potassium, ez mode is drinking a gatorade or any other offbrand version of gatorade, electrolytes are disgustingly underrated in terms of helping sleep

if you want an infinitely cheaper option, get no-salt, it's designed for old fucks with heart issues on low sodium diets and it is supposed to replace table salt but is made of pottassium instead of sodium
throw about 2-4 servings of that No-Salt stuff into a cup, then put a tiny bit of table salt in there (i find having enough sodium helps me personally but you can disregard if you want), then fill with water, THEN you wanna put in some sort of flavoring to mask the icky taste, i like to use either crystal light lemonade packets of any flavor or those really cheap tiny squeeze bottles of water flavorings

always always always make sure there's no caffiene in them, some squeeze bottles of water flavorings are made for energy/caffiene, don't fuck yourself over

second, take a melatonin, while i'm very fucking confident that you have been taking melatonin already and suffering regardless, taking melatonin in combination with the potassium is like the 2nd piece of a 2 part puzzle, despite not working on it's own, it hits hard as fuck once ur electrolytes are set

next, and this is optional, make a giant thing of tea, herbal specifically, i use 4 cups of water and 2 tea bags of chamomile with 16 packets of this zero calorie sweetener called EQUAL, its about 14 bux for a box of 800 packets so it won't break the bank due to the sheer amount you can get

when i drink this right before bed, i become dizzy tired, this is also in combination with the cheap electrolyte drink plus a melatonin

few more things that are still important

first, if you start drinking tea regularly for this (because it works crazy good, my theory is just that it functions the same way certain people need to binge eat in order to fall asleep like i used too), then start finding places you can buy tea in bulk for cheap, online works really good but you might even have a local tea shop availible near you

second, if you want statistics and metrics on knowing how soon you might fall asleep i have 2

first, and this might be completly confusing and make no sense, if so disregard entirely and just read the second one, but for me, if i see a bit of hypnopompic/hypnogaugic light while laying down with my eyes closed i can generally tell that i am on track to fall asleep rather than just simply hoping i can fall asleep
when i talk about hypnopompic/hypnogaugic light, i'm not reffering to anything esoteric i swear, it's a lucid dreaming concept that i forgot what it was important for but it's apart of dreaming in some way

now if you think im a fucking retard for the first one, this next one is more grounded, the second way to tell, and honestly i think this is the absolute best way to tell, is if you cannot really hold a long winded fantasy while laying in bed with your eyes closed, especially one with high emotions

when i used to struggle to sleep one common theme was that i would have long winded fantasies and stuff with advanced plot lines, every time this happened i knew i would not be able to fall asleep within the next few hours

now that i do the 3 above things, my thought when going to bed are extremly light hearted and usually disconnected from each seperate thought instead of one big fantasy or story being made up

when your brain is relaxed and ready for sleep, it tends to wind down to the point that long drawn out thoughts are far more difficult to hold on to and pay attention too where as when you're wired as fuck trying to force sleep, you'll often...

...have enough energy to maintain a long winded storyline/fantasy/thought

by understanding this concept you can get a pretty accurate gauge on whether you need to take an emergency sleeping pill (very similar to melatonin in that i was completely unable to get any effect from them until i did the electrolyte drink, only then did it work as intended for me to actually force sleep) or do anything like that as opposed to waiting 3 hours trying to force sleep only to have even less time to work with than before with no results to show for it, or even worse, taking a sleeping pill with about 4 hours until you're supposed to wake up and then sleeping through your alarm

hope this helps, wishing you the best anon, and goddamn i've written this same thing multiple times, i see this question come up often to screen shot this shit and just post the screencap every time these kinds of threads come up because i used to literally scratch my arms until they bled from the sheer rage of not being able to sleep but now i sleep easy as fuck due to the what I've just wrote about

wishing the best for u anon! sleep while now and into ur future bed times!

I find that putting on a video on the phone (usually a gameplay in my case) and sleep while watching it helps. Even if I'm not looking at it, I like the background noise.
Might help you, too.

You had it better than me. Tried to sleep at 2, tossed and tumbled in bed until 4, woke up at 7:30.
Sleep well, OP and everyone.

another piece of advice for you my friend
sometimes taking stressful thoughts and things that you can't stop thinking about and putting them to paper just throws the weight of them off

i've had times where writing them down made me even more tired than any of the methods i talked about before

i highly reccomend this especially if you have a lot of stress over uncertainty, just simply write about your worries, putting them to paper can often ease the burden on your mind to such a degree you instantly feel capable of sleeping right after

good luck anon!

thank you fren this makes sense ngl

Worrying that you are going to worry sounds like pretty classic anxiety, anon.
Combining congnitive behavioral therapy exercises and sleep protocols should help.
The US .coast guare had a 20 year study on the impact of irregular sleep and ultrahigh physical and emotional demand on job performamce. The Behavioral Health Handbook and the Crew Endurance Management System are pretty much THE user guide to correcting problems, including anxiety and sleep disorders, in critical military and high-stress environments.
Absolutely worth a read.

That's pretty interesting I'll look it up, thanks.

And yes classic anxiety is what I have and it's a massive struggle, its been all my life, since I was like 11 year old, because my home life was awful. Jfl
