I got fired from my job a year ago.I was with that company for a very long time (quite a few years), but I bent company policy to help a colleague of mine out. I'd never had any issues or anything for the many years I was there, and I had multiple managers and colleagues try and plead my case, including my department lead. But the issue is the colleague I tried to help forged a document without my knowledge (I genuinely just assumed they did things correctly otherwise) so because I was helping them with the issue overall, I was fired with them. It was an issue they were not willing to take any leniency on despite otherwise good rapport with the company and management.I took the time off to help some family because a close family member became very ill shortly before I lost my job and needed a lot of help at home.I have my first interview in quite some time tomorrow. What do I say when I am asked about my previous job and why I no longer work there?
>>34628805I would lie about the whole terms of being fired (just say downsizing or smth) and then say your employment gap was to take care of a sick relative
>>34628834I thought about that, but if they contact the company I assume they will say that I was canned, because HR made it clear I was not eligible to be rehired in the future.
>>34628842If they contact the company to confirm employment history or references that it.
>>34628842Don't lie about being canned, just lie about the reason. Downsizing is a perfectly valid reason for being fired
>>34628805bro stop this humiliation ritual, either become the boss of yourself or get a public job
>>34629112What do you mean a public job? Government? And I would actually kind of like to be my own boss, but I burned through way too much savings so I need to get some income again now and somewhat quickly. And honestly for as much as it makes me feel stupid, I don't even know what I would "do" as far as having my own business goes, even if its a nice idea to fantasize about.
don’t tell them the whole story. none of this story is good for your career goals. just say it was time to move on
>>34628842in the US, they are only allowed to basically ask to verify that you were employed there, and if they would hire you again.they would not be allowed to ask/get the details from them.
>>34629126As of now, if asked I just plan to say "I was let go" and quickly move the subject on. Probably just say it was convenient timing due to the familial issue to move things to a new topic.>>34629137>if they would hire you again. While my old manager would rehire me if he was allowed to, the company themselves would not. As I said, "Not eligible for rehire"
>>34629124>What do you mean a public job? Government?yes
>>34628842Usually companies dont like airing out old skeletons because it makes them look bad. You should just list them and see, Its better than not doing it.
>>34628805Unless your old company REALLY hates you, they'll go along with the downsizing or restructuring story just because it's simpler and doesn't get them involved.
>>34629274Never really looked into it.Could be nice.>>34629379>>34629448I just assume that they'd say he wasnt eligible for rehire. I didn't expect details really.Just going to say I was laid off and try to move things forward from there.
>>34628805As rule of thumb, never tell full story and embellish things. Make up believable sob stories. Honesty never gets you employed.
