How come whenever I go and visit doctors, I can never have a meaningful discussion with them about my health? It's always like, they see me and then it's like they have this invisible limit on the number of questions you get to ask them, and like once you've asked them 3 questions, they're like okies time to get ur labz done and the you are outta here buddy! It's like come on man. How do you get a doctor's undivided attention? Do I have to be a billionaire and pay for their private jet or something?
Appointments are usually 20-30 minutes and you are just 1 of 20 people they are going to see that day. Depending on how involved your questions are, there simply isnt enough time. Are you being seen once a year for a preventive health check up? That's the whole point of the appointment is making sure you're up to date on screenings/labs etc. Just make another appointment or see if you can ask some of these questions on the patient portal.Try to prioritize your most important questions next time. Doctors are people too.
>>34630293Most doctors don't actually understand anything, so they aren't capable of answering questions. They're only really taught to follow checklists and procedures, they don't know the "why" behind anything they do.
>>34630370>they don't know the "why" behind anything they do.lol that is just... what?! didn't they go to years of medical school to know the why?
>>34630419They're given a broad overview, but a comprehensive understanding would require far more time than they're given as well as a genuine passion that goes beyond the classroom and the profession. Most are content to just follow orders and routine, without really digging any deeper than the bare minimum.
>>34630461Is interesting, I was talking to one of my PCPs about something with my blood and they even warned me that what they're talking about was outside of their expertise.
>>34630575But apparently they diagnosed me with high cholesterol and vitamin D deficiency, and they're gonna prescribe me pills for those.Yay...

>>34630293In college, they taught us to always let the patients speak as much as they want, but that you should try to guide them if you feel like they're getting sidetracked. In practical terms, >>34630346 is right, many doctors unfortunately just want the appointment to end so they can call in the next patient. Understandable in a way, often times there are dozens and dozens of people in line.Obviously this is not ideal, but unfortunately many doctors act like mercenaries. It IS important to let the patient talk, they often tell you stuff without even knowing it's important for the case, and it strengthens the bonds.Besides, one of the Dr.'s job is to inform the patient and clear any doubts, otherwise the patient may for example take the prescription wrong, or maintain bad habits.Anyway, if you can't find another doctor, try to focus on the major concerns and doubts, but don't forget to ask him if it's something important.

>>34630293If you are in a National Health Service country (i.e. anywhere in the world but the USA) they are in fact limited to a specific number of minutes per patient. If you are in the US, you are paying for their time and simply insist on it.

>>34633084Hey, doc, I got a question. Is it possible to feel like your flesh is being eaten from the inside when you're anemic? Like there's tiny little ants just eating away at your bones, bit by bit.I have G6PD deficiency, and when I asked my doctor that question they did not confirm anything, they just said, and I quote, "anemia is not a feeling."And also how I would always get a fever after eating anything sugary. And how that never happens to me cause I get plenty of folate and iron in my food since learning of my G6PD deficiency a few years ago. They didn't comment on that either. Makes me think they think I'm full of shit, the fever thing.
>>34633084So does that explain why they've put me on lifetime blood thinners for my first and only unprovoked blood clot? Big money for the company that makes the blood thinner? Do doctors get paid by the makers of the drug for every prescription they write?
my nigga?
Hey I'm fucking talking to you
>>34630346I totally agree with you but it wasn't this bad 10 or 20 years ago. Not for general practitioners anyway. The uncomfortable reality is that medical schools and their cartel have created such a doctor shortage that it's negatively affecting patient care.
>>34630293are you in the UK? that sounds like the NHSgo private, choose your doctor wisely.
