I want to be a videogame developer but I am 34.

What do?
>>
Appeal to a niche or fetish. don't try and make yet another indie game in a saturated genre unless you actually have a unique idea for a twist. the easiest way to start making games, is to make smut. people won't play generate games in a market saturated with them, but gooners looking for their fetish material will. use sex appeal to get people to play what will otherwise be your generate game.

In my case, I like Onara content. I play other people's games with that content even if the game itself is pretty mediocre. It's like a carrot on a stick and people will fall for it. make smut games with simple gameplay loops and go from there.

What do you get out of lying on the internet?
>>

>What do?
Become an Indie dev, and you don't need to know much about coding depending on what you create, but it's important to get the basics down, and learn patterns.
>>
>>34634027
I played videogames from the age of 4 so why shouldn't I try?
>>
>>34633962
It's never been easier to make a video game. Think about what kind of game you want to make, then ask the AI chat bot of your choice to guide you through every single step. 2D, 3D, whatever. Then when it gets too hard you can hire people on fiverr or upwork for not a lot of money. The only games that are truly exponentially out of reach are things like advanced vehicle simulation games (think BeamNG or MSFS) or giant MMORPG/live service things. Everything else is fair game. Literally just drop what you're doing and start now. You have the entire wealth of knowledge from the internet at your fingertips without any of the effort of finding it yourself.
>>
>>34634022
It has worked for so many devs on DL site. a simple game with smut and it sales or at least gets more attention than if it had no smut. you underestimate gooners who'll play ANYTHING with their fetish in it.
>>
>>34634047
You are not the kind of person I want playing my videogames. Go be a horrible person to your parents.
>>
>>34634010
This, but specialize in vanilla since every other indie failure follows this generic advice and all that is churned out is degenerate fetishes. The vanilla niche is almost non existent thanks to it.
>>
There's a cheap game design certificate program offered online by University of the People.

If you're an adult with a day job you can probably afford to take those classes and see if it works for you.
>>
>>34634088
if every indie dev followed this advice we'd have more onara content. but it is severely lacking. hint hint, OP. there's your market. there's tons of vanilla shit. look at the tags on hentai gaming sites. the most popular one is "get raped if you lose" type stuff. that is as vanilla of a smut gameplay mechanic as it gets.
>>
>>34634105
>"get raped if you lose" type stuff.
I'm not a closeted gay agp who wants to play as a girl who gets raped, so I'm definitely not going to make that kind of game.

Dude. Game dev is an industry with a shit ton of roles. What role do you want to do? You can't do fucking everything, not when you're on the fence, you don't have that in you. You have to choose.

Are you a math nerd and want to design scoring systems, actor movement algorithms and bullshit like that? Focus on design and coding.

Do you want to draw big titty girls and animate them? Keep drawing and translate that into pixel art. Do you like both Origami and drawing? Become a 3D sculptor.

Are you a musician? Learn to design or procure sounds and music.

Are you jewish? Make calls and have people advertise someone else's game, publish it and establish the means to get money.
>>
>>34634287
Honest answer I would like to be involved in the story writing, but actually doing the scoring and stuff would be ok, it's better than doing nothing with your life.
>>
>>34634290
Start with making a visual novel in Ren'Py. Idk if you can vibecode it but it has good tutorials/documentation. You can also just try writing shit and post it on some writing website or whatever. For programming, idk how much you know but there are books are game design and patterns. You need to know data structures and algorithms and some math for gamedev, find books on those. Try implementing some of the stuff but use premade free assets to get started. The tech job market is bad and the gamedev market is even worse afaik, so probably do this on the side (indie dev). I think /vg/'s /agdg/ might have resources. Good luck.

Ask AI
>>
>>34633962
Just do it? Age isn't a factor, only actual desire to create.
>>
>>34634290
>storytelling
Don't we all? You need leadership skills to get people to help you and tell them why your vision is better than theirs. Talking skills and the energy to go look for them are the most important.

>it's better than doing nothing
No, it's not. A hell job is never better than being a miserable NEET. You'd have to be in really deep shit to want a shit job. Coding is a shit job, you can tell away by trying it. Punching keys isn't hard, what's hard is the big fucking wallless labyrinth where guidance is basic and your needs are complex. If you like copying what they teach in youtube and conform to that little alone, great. If you'd rather "do things your own way", you will find yourself losing time, and time is what you can't afford.

Do give it a try, OP. Just mind it there's a reason why it's not something for everybody, and don't mull over it if you end up disliking it.
>>
OP, are you larping as that guy from Welcome to the NHK? You know, Misaki or whatever the fuck she is called, will not stand at your door one day.

GameDev is dead. It is not just a question of having a good idea, it is also the marketing, If you want to vibe code something yourself, you are better off providing something open source and use it as a reference for job interviews. actually selling shit is almost impossible for new players
>>
>>34634958
No, I just want a job and game dev sounds fun. I have no negative feelings towards anime.
>>
You have to actually learn skills that will help you. You could do something simple in RPGmaker. Or you could watch some indie devs on youtube. You'll have to commit actual effort here.

Whats your game idea?
>>
>>34633962
You should try developing a video game.
>>
>>34635036
The stardew valley dev did a news interview once where he said he quit his job to become a game dev.
>>
>>34633962
>What do?
Learn how to make video games.
>>
>>34635726
You aren't no John Carmack yourself lad.
>>
If you're learning to code, start with a 2D game, pick an engine that can do 2D (Godot is nice but far from your only option), no networking/multiplayer, keep it SMALL. Your first project should not be your dream game. Dream games are always too big. 2D art is also easier than 3D.

Use AI to ask questions and explain stuff. It is great for learning, but don't have it generate code for you unless you have the patience to review every line and ask questions until you understand the entire change well, including possible alternatives. Vibecoding without solid programming skills is a trap, it gets harder and harder to do anything once your game grows.
>>
>>34636606
Thank you, I will keep this in mind.
>>
>>34635731
There are 9000 vidya games released each year, all of them not written by Carmack.
>>
>>34636886
And why can I not make one of them? It would make people happy.
>>
>I'm 34 so that precludes me from working in an industry full of 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 year olds
>>
>>34638031
It's more that I am 34 and have not had ANY career before, I am not say, a lawyer turning game dev, ive only worked in dead end jobs
>>
>>34633962
Buy RPG Maker MV and make a visual novel with rpg elements.
>>
Modding. There are plenty of websites like Moddb and l4d2 maps.com that have small communities of modders that could do some really cool stuff if more people knew about modding
>>
make games
