Initiate a conversation with something you're interested in and encourage him to talk whilst leaning the conversation towards other things that aren't whatever you don't care about. Or just tell him. Honestly if he gets vexed it's his problem. Tell him you want to change the subject and find it annoying when he has no care for whether you're interested or not, if he does take it in the wrong way, let it sit for a few days and then go back to him, apologise for upsetting him and be honest, you want to be friends with him (i assume) but he is boring. Idk what else to say you guys are fully grown men, he should understand
