it genuinely blows my mind how economically illiterate the average person is. if you don't actively participate in consumer brainrot, you get labeled as greedy, stingy, or a cheapskate.

no, i am not paying $2k for a designer bag with a massive logo when a high quality rep costs a fraction of the price.
no, i am not paying $9 for a trending tiktok drink i can make better at home.
no, i am not buying overpriced ice cream today when i know it goes on sale next week.
and no, i am not chipping in for a birthday gift for a coworker i have spoken to twice.

why is wasting money considered normal, but being responsible is called greed? how do you deal with coworkers or friends who judge your spending?

>why is wasting money considered normal, but being responsible is called greed?
I'm not well versed on politics or economics but I'd that is essential for capitalism that the average Joe is a consumerist braindead moron.
>how do you deal with coworkers or friends who judge your spending?
Why do you even care

I have always been very good with money and people listen to me when it comes to it. People who need to spend a lot on designer shit have a self-esteem problem. The luxury brands make most of their revenue with mid to low income people.
You shouldn’t care. Just do what you think is right and don’t judge others. This should not bother you. If they need advice they come to you but you cannot save them or lecture them.
You should still chip in for presents and occasionally spend a bit on social activities. You should still spend some (never more than 10%) of your reocurring income on what you may deem wasteful. You don’t know how long your life is. Early experiences and being liked pay off in the long run more than any interest you can get on an investment. This way you meet potential business partners and actually understand what people like to spend money on, wich makes it easier to start a business, wich is the only way to really make money, if you are not averse to calculated risks

To a degree yes, but it's better to pay for something you wish to support. If you don't wish to support it, at least enjoy it or ensure it gives you peace of mind. In those examples:

>no, i am not paying $2k for a designer bag with a massive logo when a high quality rep costs a fraction of the price.
Yes, no harm in avoiding Gucci, LV, etc if you don't want to be known as a fashion diva. However, don't go buying polyester or other plastic materials which dissolve their plastics into your skin or across other clothes in the wash. ESPECIALLY don't go buying slop made in China, Bangladesh, etc. Buy cotton/wool/linen, find a locally made knit or "quiet" luxury, and make sure you buy clothes spun and woven in countries that won't put slaves in their factories. For example, Hugo Boss is generally good, as are sites like Octobre Editions which shows the clothing composition as well as where the clothes were made, imported, etc.
>no, i am not paying $9 for a trending tiktok drink i can make better at home.
Good, you already know how to make something. You could teach your coworkers what your solution is like and gain their respect.
>no, i am not buying overpriced ice cream today when i know it goes on sale next week.
Good
>and no, i am not chipping in for a birthday gift for a coworker i have spoken to twice.
Depends if not doing so would cause tension in the workplace. Probably not a big deal in the long run.
