This week I'm going to see a psychiatrist for the first time in my life for my social anxiety problem, what am I in for? Will she ask me for a summary of my life, or will she just listen to my problem, prescribe medication, and send me away? What will happen?
>>34639550She will ask what the problem is. You should tell her.
>>34639550It depends. Not every psychiatrist is a psychologist. Some are both, some are just psychiatrists. If she is just a psychiatrist she is going to approach your issues in an impersonal and clinical way, focusing on feelings and thoughts as if they were symptoms like describing a flu or something. Then she will make notes of all of your problems or issues that you tell her about, and she will either want to test you with questionnaires to nail some type of official diagnosis. Depending on what you get diagnosed with, she may either refer you to a psychologist to do the actual talking therapy going over thoughts and feels, or prescribe you medication or both. If she is also a psychologist as well as a psychiatrist then you'll just be asked what you prefer. She will offer both types of services and it's up to you to pursue one over the other or both if you want.
