I'm 32 and unemployed living with my parents with a good chunk of savings. I've been trying to find some way to make a lot of money. I have a job offer for $27/hr in a factory, I used to make $26/hr. I've been thinking of learning mobile car detailing. I've been watching some videos about it but of course they make it look way better than it is. Still, for 500 bucks equipment I could resell for half later, a 250 dollar starting investment isn't bad. I have my own reliable car. I know a bit of basic accounting. I could learn this. My question is: is it worth it? Has anyone here done this or had a friend that did it? Is it worth gttng into? Seeing the places around me that offer to do it already, is extremely discouraging. But so is working for 27 an hour which can't afford me much of anything.
>>34702577Who would pay some dingus to come wash their car for them? People too lazy to do it themselves just take it to a car wash.
need to do both at the same time for a while to generate a book of business and good reviewsprobably going to clean a few cars for free or almost nothing in the beginningmake a little website that provides a menu and a contact formgo to every collision shop around you and talk to the general manager, tell them you can give them 50% backend discount for the first 1-3 jobs they give you and then a 30% backend discount after that -- heads up you'll be cleaning a lot of broken glass
>>34702589You do interior cleaning too. And... idk, rich people? That's what I'm trying to figure out. These guys on YouTube say "welll I now make 550k / yr with 4 trucks and employees but you can make 2000 a week just on your own, also you'll have rich clients who will help you build connections for other businesses" etc etc typical survivorship bias YouTuber bullshit.I'm just trying to see how good the reality of it actually is. The only thing I will say to your post is, tthat thinking "wow what a dumbass who would pay for that" is the best way to cuck yourself out of money. Because people ARE dumbasses who will pay for ANYTHING. The only question is, are there enough of them to get you money?>>34702598>probably going to clean a few cars for free or almost nothing in the beginningI'm fine with that. I was gonna practice on mine first lol.>go to every collision shop around you and talk to the general manager, tell them you can give them 50% backend discount for the first 1-3 jobs they give you and then a 30% backend discount after that -- heads up you'll be cleaning a lot of broken glassHow much could I charge for that? I don't mind cleaning up broken glass but I don't want to end up a broken glass wagie.>make a little website that provides a menu and a contact formWould a faceberg page be enough or should I spring for a website?
>>34702645Thing is, with your initial investment and risk of of 250$ you're basically losing nothing if it doesn't pan out. Even 1000 to 500 a week is a survivable income in exchange for not having to wage.Unless you literally do not see any business at all, your initial investment will pay itself back even if you do remain behind expectations and can't earn a living from it alone. So in short, just try it. At worst its going to be a learning experience. I would advise you to look into properly registering a company and into liability insurances though - your worst case scenario isn't losing your investment, but the taxman kicking in your backdoor or becoming liable for accidentally fucking up someones car.
>>34702925Yeah I found some reddo post about a good place to get insurance. Said it was really quick to set up a policy. >500 a weekBarely even survivable in my area. 1k maybe but even then. My biggest goal is just being able to set my own schedule, to some degree. Obviously with clients needs encroaching on that.
I'm talking to some friends and they say it's very oversaturated. My question is... how do I find out if that's the case in my area? It's basically sounding like such an uphill battle I am becoming discouraged from it. Has anyone else done it and can you tell firsthand how you stood out? I just see myself as some noob, like I have been at my factory jobs, fucking something up, meanwhile some guy who's done it for 30 years gets it right every time and I run back to the wage cage in embarrassment. Which I wouldn't mind if it was a 10% of even 50% chance of that happening, but it's making me feel like it's a 99% chance.I could stand to lose 500 dollars. But I couldn't stand to throw it away frivolously. If that makes sense.
>>34704532You can stand out by teaming up with local tire shops or burger joints to have an event where you camp out and be available. You’ll probably get busy though so, maybe you have a couple worthless cousins or bums you know.
>>34705348Do you think I'd get sales from a burger joint? Guess I could try. Those places usually have such limited parking. Tire shops I could try though. I would love to secure some kind of contract with a business that has a fleet of cars or even better trucks, and have something more steady that way.
>>34702577check the autodetailing subredditask in the autos forum on 4chan as wellmy problem with a lot of mobile detailers is they don't do as good as a job as i wantbut its very convenient especially as an apartment dweller who does not have a garage your best advertisement is literally washing cars in places where you're visible and people will approach you and ask for info
>>34705983oh yeah I forgot about /o/I feel ashamed.>your best advertisement is literally washing cars in places where you're visible and people will approach you and ask for infoI wouldn't say I'm really socially awkward, I've managed to talk myself up in interviews and stuff, but I do have a tinge of that beta fag energy, is that gonna screw me over? I am friendly and I go along with conversation well, just not super extroverted, if that makes sense. I know that's gonna hold me back in any kind of business I run, and it'll get better, but there's a reason I'm not trying to be a realtor or something like that, if it makes sense.>>34705983>my problem with a lot of mobile detailers is they don't do as good as a job as i wantCan you elaborate?
>>34702589>Who would pay some dingus to come wash their car for them? People too lazy to do it themselves just take it to a car wash.yes but even at full service ones they typically do a shit job because they get paid on volume (and don't usually get tips because theres' like 20 people working at them at once, so how would you even manage tips)you pay for a mobile detailer for their attention and quality. People who goto a carwash are not the target market.
