Their special interests aren't necessarily how you connect with them on a deep level, their special interests are basically their 'mind cigarettes', they do it because it's repetitive and familiar and helps them manage daily anxiety. If you want to get through to her effectively, be short and blunt and direct and speak plain about things. Tell her you like her, if she asks why you tell her because you think she is cute and if she asks cute how tell her because you think she is attractive, that sort of thing.
