2 decent looking female cashiers for some reason, talked to me and made commentary on my purchases over the last 2 days. They asked questions, one was interested in what I was buying, another asked what my plans were for the day.

At first, I was ecstatic. I didn't think any women would ever approach me or talk to me at all, ever. I don't expect it anymore so when it does happen, I'm shocked and surprised. Then I realized - oh, this is probably some marketing ploy from management at the store. They don't care. Why would they? I mean, I used to be a cashier and you couldn't pay me enough to fake small talk with customers, so idk how they're managing to get current employees to do it but... it's the only reasonable explanation. It's not like these 2 women would actually show interest in me... right? I'm a fit, decent looking guy, but I know better than to assume that means anything anymore.

I'm just trying to make sense of this. is this new? Maybe these were truly innocent interactions and I'm just too cynical and distrusting to notice. What do you think? How would you respond in this situation?

You are definitely overthinking this. Women are masters at faking social interaction for personal benefit. They were probably just 'encouraged' to be more engaging to customers, or maybe were bored.

Yeah you're probably right. Kind of seems like I want it to mean something, anything, but truth is - it probably doesn't mean shit. That just makes me wish they never spoke in the first place.

There are no good people, no poor people, nothing like that on the street. Only people looking to make a profit.

Oh that's just Emily and Peyton. They do that to everyone.

That Peyton is a good egg, I'd watch out for Emily though. I saw her selling beer to minors one time.

The way I see it, thinking the cashier likes you because she's being nice to you is like thinking a stripper at a strip club is actually into you. They're only nice to you because that's their job. The female cashiers who are cold are likely that way because they've been in the job for a long time and have been hit on a lot and don't care anymore.
