Dont pick up video games to show off. Unless you have a remarkable talent for whatever game you play no one gives a shit. To make friends, just play whatevers popular. To have fun, play shmups and other arcade games. Just go to the Electric Underground channel on YouTube and pick out a random game he's covered positively and go from there.
