I'm 30 years old and I find my tech job completely uninteresting and meaningless. I was always the creative type, enjoying hobbies like music composition, ceramics or designing maps for video games. I ended up in tech hoping to work on video games, but these days game dev is absolutely in the dumps. Above all, I struggle to relate with tech enthusiasts and people who spend their off days working on open source projects. I also think AI will absolutely fingerblast this industry in the matter of a decade. So I'm looking to pivot to some other field. I consider many other career paths, but I struggle to pick one and just pursue it. There's so many different options and variables to consider. I already went through the books 80,000 Hours and Designing Your Life, but I'm still lost and I could use some street wisdom.

who knows, i found my quiet peace with a tech job that is attached to the creative field like helping create movies. I could have been making more money, have a better standing life, still have loved ones in my life that left due to a time consuming pursuit, but for people sometimes you are compelled to find something like this to be content. its all grunt work in the end but you are working on a craft, and sometimes it is a craft that gives an output you can call your own. find something you enjoy the task regardless if you get paid or not. i find the people who wished they were into game dev but fear leading to inaction is a common fate, if you really wanted to you just do it in the limited time you have to spare.

If you make $100k a year you can retire by the time AI takes over.

Three choices:
1 As the anon says, find ways to be creative within tech
2 Quit tech and get a creative job
3 Use the 40 hours a week you spend doing tech to fund the 128 hours you spend being creative

idk i feel like it's best not to make your hobby your job.
what else are you interested in working on, cause i would venture to say it will pay much less than what you are doing now.
i switched careers because i wanted to be outdoors, not because i have a passion for the work and its made me happy. i also make less money from it by the way.
if i was in your shoes i'd just make video games in your off time even if you are using ai. it may lead to a job at some point, and furthermore, there will be a point where yes, entry jobs aren't needed due to AI but they will need time tested people to manage AI and watch over it and you may fulfill that position even for a video game.
i'd at least look at a video game project you can support in your offtime because its something you can put on your resume that may lead to a job down the line.
