This is not legal advice but in the states you always get a lawyer appointed. Just because he has a court date tomorrow does not mean the trial will be tomorrow. Make sure he engages with the lawyer and does what the lawyer tells him to do.

Sounds like he just has some kind of hearing with a judge instead of any kind of actual trial. This is the United States so you get a lawyer even if you can’t afford one. It’s called a public defender and they would have reached out to your dad if they came to represent him. You literally cannot be tried by a lawyer here unless you’re dealing with some glowie-level nonsense. If this hearing goes poorly then you either get court or probably a fine or something. If you two are legal immigrants, then there’s genuinely nothing to worry about here because your dad literally is not walking into trial without a lawyer. Or even if he’s a brainlet who repeatedly ignored his own public defender for a while, there will still be representation at his bench when he walks in. They just wouldn’t be able to defend as well since they didn’t get any facts from you two.

You guys are almost certainly going to be just fine. Since you’ll probably be talking to a judge and not cops, then the other anon’s advice to act like a stoner at a traffic stop might not be the best. Standing in front of the judge at a hearing is ACTUALLY the time to explain yourself instead of just using your Miranda rights to stop having to talk to cops. So you can go with stay quiet strategy. Might work okay for foreign people. Might be seen as weird, though.

Even in prison here you get medical conditions like that taken care of. His diabetes and foot and eye drops will most likely be fine, at least for a time. Unless he’s much more frail than you’re saying, he probably stands a good chance of making it out, especially if he doesn’t get that maximum.
