A guy I was in friendly terms with passed away a couple of days ago and most people in my friend group are devastated. I feel apathetic, I do feel sorry over the fact he had a lot of pontential and will to live so it's really shitty he had to go when he was in his mid 20's with all his life ahead of him

In my case, my life has been really shitty and I see death as a liberation from this shithole but that's how I view it in my personal case and experience, I know there's people who are happy to be alive but whenever I talk about his passing with one of our friends I seem too detached while the other person is being emotional and vulnerable and I think I'm being shitty, I try to offer encouraging words and advice but it seems fake, like I'm saying what I feel like I'm supposed to say

What's wrong with me?

Suicide or car crash? Or something else?

You're trying your best to be empathic, that matters a lot. Don't get too in your own head about it and 100% do not share your own views on death with these people as they are grieving.

He drowned in a lake, he went with two other friends and he chose to take a shortcut or swim further and they didn't see him again, he was widely loved by most people in that town so everyone is going through a lot, especially because his parents had to come to do the paper work to send his body to his home country so the situation is prolonging itself

Thank you Anon, yeah I try to be encouraging my telling them that those memories are painful but at least they got the chance to meet such a good person as he was. Kinda like that quote of "being fortunate enough to have met someone who makes saying goodbye so hard" that's what I try to tell them

But in my personal view towards myself I despise my own life and it's an uphill battle that I didn't ask to be thrown into (I tell myself this, I didn't say it to any of them) so it's really hard for me to connect emotionally so I hope I'm not pissing them off

It's not really about him being dead that's sad but how he went pretty gruesomely
