what else can I do with this stupid thing? or adjacent careers?
Dont let the sunk cost fallacy limit your options.
>>34850284okay but what does that mean in practice? what are my options in the first place?
I guess go all in on AI-fucking-everything and chase the dollars until the next retarded fad takes over. FWIW I've been the IT manager at my company for the past 14 years and I absolutely hate what tech has become. I just want to run servers and find innovative solutions to problems, not "pay constantly for someone else to run it" or "just get some AI in there bro" but that's where we are.
I was/am in a similar situation and maybe my story can help you.I worked in FAANG for ~4 years as an SDE after college. Got laid off in the early 2020s. I hated my job anyway and when I was looking for other jobs I would read the job description and realize it was more of the same shit I hated. I even did a couple interviews but none of them went anywhere.I was out of options and moved back to my hometown with my parents for a while. I was pretty depressed and bored all day with no job, but I felt "stuck" and didn't really have a way to get into another industry.I ended up finding a job at a small manufacturing company through someone my dad knows. Software engineering and engineering in general has a lot of transferable skills. I got a job doing QA at the company and it didn't pay great, but there is no on-call, much less stressful, and no arrogant Indians in my hometown. I have since transitioned to a more managerial position where I make more than I did as an SDE. It's at a small company with 12 employees. I know the CEO personally and go out to lunch with him once a week or so. The CEO of Meta or Amazon would never do that.So I guess the main takeaway is to see what skills you have that could apply to another job, and rely on your network/references because you might not have all the qualifications. Also be prepared for a potential pay cut, at least in the short term until you prove yourself.
