My longest dry fast was 3 days. Since then, I have not been able to do it that long. This week, I tried to dry fast again. I did a 24 hour dry fast, then drank water and took a ballet class (so 1 day dry, 1 day water). Usually I don’t do a hard workout like that while fasting because it feels horrible. Anyway I felt pretty ok during the ballet class (other than feeling a bit weak and had an electrical zap feeling in my arm once) and then felt ok the rest of the night. When it was time to sleep, I started feeling horrible. I was so exhausted but couldn’t sleep. I had palpitations throughout my whole body despite laying down resting. I was getting more and more nauseous. I finally fell asleep but it was a weird feeling where I felt like I was still awake but also dreaming at the same time. The same dream kept repeating over and over again. The dream was that I couldn’t tell if I was playing video games or if I was eating. I kept convincing myself I was ok because I ate. But then I would realize it was a video game and not really me eating. I had this same repeating dream experience the second time I almost died (long story short I have been hospitalized 2 times for severe concussions). I eventually fully woke up and was not able to go back to sleep. I felt worse and worse like I needed to eat but food sounded sickening because my body felt so bad. I was so nauseous I almost threw up but held it in. I felt so weak I could barely stand up. It felt like I could fall at any moment. I still had palpitations. My fiancé insisted I needed to break my fast ASAP with some fruit. I ate a kiwi which was actually really satisfying. I also had a protein bar which I ate very slowly since I still did not feel good. I had a little diarrhea. About an hour later, I was back to 100% normal. My mind was clear and my body was back to normal. I then had a realization: did I almost die just now?Cont
ContMy BMI is on the low end of normal but I still want to be able to do longer fasts occasionally. I think I just took it too far with it being so hot out and dry fasting and working out hard. I really have to be in the right mental state and be doing really low level activities during that time. Who has tried dry or water fasting? What was the longest you have gone? Has anyone had this strange dream experience if you faced near death?
>>34870708Anon, why are you fasting?
Your electrolytes were low due to the exercise and dehydration. You could have given yourself a nasty heart condition- look up the effects of hyper and hypokalaemia. Don't do this again. (from a final year med student)
>>34870708There doesn't seem to be any reason why you need to go without food, and there is no reason why any healthy person ever needs to go without water. What on Earth makes you think dehydrating yourself is a good idea? It's extremely dangerous.
>>34870708Just eat healthy, whatever
I was fasting for religious and health reasons. Our bodies produce water and we can survive much longer without food or water than you think.
Anon med student: I could see why you would come to the conclusion of hypokalemia from lack of intake or hyper from rhabdo. However that doesn’t explain the rapid return to baseline after ingestion of a single kiwi and protein bar. Perhaps it was hypoglycemia or something causing those symptoms? I will be more careful in the future and definitely won’t exercise while fasting.Side note: congrats on your hard work on getting this far in med school. That’s no joke. I recommend starting to think outside the box and not take the words of your textbooks as absolute truth. For example, look into cures for cancer. You will go down a shocking and life changing rabbit hole.
>>34872491>Our bodies produce water No, they don't. >and we can survive much longer without food or water than you think. No, we can't. Not drinking means guaranteed death in about a week. Not eating means guaranteed death in about three months. There is no conceivable benefit to going without water.
>>34870708Whoever told you that dryfasting is a real thing is trying to injure/kill you. Dryfasting is something for wrestlers/fighters to do very briefly to make a certain weight cutoff. Anything outside of that is completely pointless.
>>34872491>Our bodies produce waterNo they don't>we can survive much longer without water than you thinkNo we can'tIf you want to fast then go ahead, but you must drink water (and more than you'd think since you aren't getting any water from food), and preferably add some sodium and potassium to your water as well (e.g. low-sodium salt) to keep your electrolytes up.
>>34872516>Not eating means guaranteed death in about three monthsNot truehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_Barbieri%27s_fast
>>34872783That guy was carrying around an entire extra body just made out of fat, this does not apply to normal persons who don't abuse their body to store a year worth of nutrients.
>>34870708dry fasting is retarded.water fasting on the other hand, the benefits are endless
>>34872780>you aren't getting any water from foodeating food uses up lots of water. if you arent eating you dont need to drink much
Our bodies do produce water. It is called endogenous water production. We break down fat which creates H2O and O2.
>>34872783My God, you're retarded! Did you even read the article you posted a link to?>he consumed only vitamins, electrolytes, an unspecified amount of yeast (a source of all essential amino acids) and zero-calorie beverages such as tea, coffee, and sparkling water, although he occasionally added milk and/or sugar to the beverages, especially during the final weeks of the fast. That isn't fasting. Fasting doesn't include taking in vitamins and electrolytes, consuming massive amounts of yeast protein, and unspecified amounts of milk and sugar as well.If you *actually* fast, that is you consume nothing at all except water, you will be dead for certain in about three months, and it doesn't even matter how obese you are: no matter what fat reserves you have you'll be dead from organ failure in three months.
>>34873710>Fasting doesn't includeIt quite obviously does though. Not for muslims like you, obviously, but this was a dietary fast not a religious one. His fast was recognized as such by his medical doctors, and additionally it was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest recorded fast. Who's the retard now, retard-kun?
>>34873710cool strawman, mind telling us who said anything about fasting for a whole 3 months or who ever did that?it is well established that recommended fasting duration for water fasting are between 1 to 10 days. and also, it is pretty well established that you must supplement electrolytes and vitamins during this time.
