Currently in the market to buy a new home.I found 2 options I like in a small town near where I work. Option 1 was 240,000 - semi-detached, garage, fenced backyard, private driveway (not shared), new siding, newly renovated, finished basement with 2 washrooms and 3 bedrooms. It came with washer & dryer, dishwasher, fridge, stove, microwave and a stainless steel side table in the kitchen. Natural gas furnace with owned hot water tank. The only bad was the shared wall. Sq Ft is 1100 ish.Option 2 is 229,000 - a detached, ~950-sq ft home built in 1946. It was fully gutted and renovated a few years ago. It has new romex wiring, new plumbing (ABS and PVC), new 100 amp panel, owned water tank, new shingles, new insulation, new eaves, new windows (but not all). New siding as well. I offered 220k on the first, and 210k on the second. In the first option, I was countered twice at 240 (he was firm). The second accepted 210k and we are now in the conditional phase.
I just did the home inspection, and things are not all sunshine and rainbows. The basement has small concrete ramps built up on the walls of the concrete basement/foundation, as if to deal with water seepage (or hide damages). There is a window that was modified in a weird way, where the piled new concrete to build it up. The window is just 2 pieces of plexiglass screwed to a glued on strip of wood (pic rel). There is a somewhat large crack right below this. The hot water would also not work, and the water meter was bypassed with a "dummy meter". The backyard also has terrible grading and slopes right into my backyard and foundation, and the windows don't have well coverings. This one also only comes with a fridge and stove. The furnace is natural gas but there is baseboard heaters on the upper floor.I almost feel like backing out of this one while I can and just giving the other guy the 240k.The cons are the shared wall, vs having my own home entirely with the detached for 30k less. The 240k home would come with more appliances, a garage and no baseboard heaters which are expensive in the winter, and property tax is 1000 less annually (2200 vs 1100). I can't see the actual foundation of the 240k home because of the finished basement. If I back out now and switch, I lose probably 1500 on lawyer fees, may need to pay hundreds for the mortgage broker which I lose, and will lose out on 900 for the inspection.What are your thoughts? I can attach more photos from the home inspection as well. I am uncertain, I can switch and spend another 30k over the 25 years of amortization, but I have to spend an additional 3k on the down payment (10% for both), plus the 3k I probably lose on all the services I've already acquired for this cheaper one.

>>34907668Brother, be careful with fixer uppers, real estate is retarded you can putting money into a place just to get it back to normal. I put 30K into my property that was nothing that even raised the value. The large cracks need a specialized inspection before you consider moving forward with that place. Get a foundation company to check it out. Depending on where you live, soil etc. it could be a huge no go or a smaller issue.

You'll get better advice from /diy/ but at a high level I agree that you should go for the other one if you don't especially love this place. That basement feels like a potentially literal money pit.
