So I was staying at a quiet hotel/glamping type place in the Southwest for a few days. The second day I walk into the office building in the morning to get coffee and I see the front desk girl is pretty cute, so I have a little casual interaction asking if there was any milk for the coffee and ask what her name is on the way out, say nice to meet you, etc. I'm not a serial flirt or anything, I only pursue things when I feel that certain "allure" that goes past physical attraction.

Later in the morning I go back to ask about any places to find minerals souvenirs and we have a slightly longer but still casual conversation and she mentions a place in town, but I was planning to go to a nearby landmark where local vendors also set up stands first. I go there and see I lucked out because there are some rockhounds with really nice pieces. I do a short hike and come back to buy some minerals and crystals, including an attractive slab of selenite.

Since we've established a small rapport and may now have something more substantial to talk about, I go back to the hotel and make a quick stop at the office to tell her what I found and see if it segues into a conversation.

All during this time I'm wary of coming off like a creepy tourist or other weirdo trying to hit on her, so I'm looking for hints that she's not interested, trying to brush me off, or just being nice as a hospitality employee. Generally I can at least get a date when I'm seriously interested in someone, and at this point I'm feeling semi-confident.

So I stop by the office again, she acknowledges me and I say something like "I really lucked out", then "Do you like gems/minerals/etc.?" At this point I figure if she wants to shut me down she'll do it, but she says yes pretty enthusiastically, so I go over to the desk and show her my find. Now I'm feeling pretty good because she liked the selenite as much as I did and asked what all the other crystals were, so we start talking about that. (con't)

From this point on I feel like it it's a lock. We have a great conversation (so it seemed to me) where I felt like I might have met my soullmate, if I weren't old enough to know better. We talk about our lives and find out we have similar ideas about our futures, agree on a lot of mundane things like how low the bar is to be a good employee in the US, and also our love of food. She asks me if I've had any good meals since I've been here, and I'm like "I don't know where to start" because I did in fact and had pictures of the best ones on my phone, so I go sit at a chair at her counter so I can show her. Again she seemed as enthusiastic about the food as I was, and we talked about where I went, what I ordered, etc. Of course this was all fairly surface-level stuff, but enough to feel promising.

Finally I ask about recommendations for the last two days of my stay. It turns out that her sister is a pastry chef at a place I was already planning to go to that night for dinner, so that was yet another pretext for a conversation later on. I go to dinner and get a fancy lava cake for dessert.

Cue next morning (last full day at this place). I go back to the office for a cup of coffee and luckily she's there, but there's another male employee too so I can't try to seal the deal like I intended. I say I went to the place where her sister works and got the lava cake, it was really good! How does she assemble it and make the chocolate shell (it was shaped like a half-dome)? She says she doesn't know, but she can ask her sister and let me know. Trying to play it cool but also densely I said "Nah it's fine, it's not like I'm going to make it at home anyway" and leave with my coffee, intending to go back later in the afternoon when hopefully she's alone again.

Then back at my room I realized, "Shit, she might have been going to text/message me". I call the front desk where she picks up. I say "Hey it's anon in room, actually I am really interested in how she made it!" and again she says she'll let me know. At this point it should've been really obvious I was interested in her and trying to play an angle right? This is where it gets aggravating.

A few hours pass without any text. I'm planning to go out for another hike an hour away. I do want this to work out but I'm not going to act desperate, odds are it won't amount to anything serious anyway. So I'm heading out, but I stop at the office one last time like I planned. She's not there, it's an older woman instead. "Can I help you?", she asks. I reply, "Oh, I just had a question for Blahblah." "Blahblah actually started feeling sick so she went home/is resting (one of those). Do you want me to pass along a message?"

"No it's fine, she has my number." Ah, so it turns out I was reading the whole situation wrong. She knew what I was building up to, she's dealt with annoying tourist guys hitting on her hundreds of time, now she ducked out so she can avoid me until I leave tomorrow. Oh well, I "shot my shot" as the kids say. We had a nice conversation anyway. I'm not going to push it anymore. I go to my car to head out for my hike. I'm parked with the office on the left and a trailer across on the right

Then, as I'm getting my things sorted, I see the woman from the office powerwalking over to the trailer. She goes around to the front which I can't see and starts talking to someone inside the trailer while gesturing at my car. I was kind of confused. Was she getting security or someone else to confront the guy harassing her employee? No. The girl comes out of the trailer and starts walking towards my car, waving.

I think, "This HAS to be it." She has to like me if she actually is sick but comes out to answer my question about the lava cake. She does know it's about the lava cake, right? This is the time, my last chance, to ask her out. The stars have aligned. Feeling quite suave for handling this whole thing so deftly, I opened the car door and crossed my arms over the top, grinning. "Did your sister get back to you about the cake?", I asked. "No, but when she does I'll definitely get back to you. So what are your plans for today?", she replied. I said I'm going to So-and-so, she hadn't heard of it. Coup de grace. "Well, if you're feeling better later on, maybe we could do something. You have my number." She said "Yes, cool, thanks" or something along those lines. A bit flustered, but in the good way. I had a good hike.

I didn't hear from her, that night or the next morning. Well. No point dwelling on it. While checking out I asked a different woman at the desk, "Is Blahblah feeling any better?" "I don't know actually (not defensively). Are you a friend of hers?" "We started talking a bit during my stay here", I replied. "Oh. Yeah, Blahblah is cool." She said she liked my hat.

That was yesterday, and now I'm home thousands of miles away. I know how to let things go, but what do you make of this?

Should've asked her back to your place after dinner. She could sense you were unconfident and it shut off her pussy completely.

I didn't feel unconfident at all actually. Since it appeared she actually was sick it seemed to make more sense for her to at least let me know she was feeling better

She was just being social and polite. If she was interested she would've called you. You basically asked her out. And then she was like "Yeah, whatever, [go away]." Working at a hotel people deal with insane people all day, so she's afraid to say "no" because on the chance it triggers you to flip out and turn into a cranky werewolf all of a sudden, as men often do.

Ok so why did she come out of the trailer when she didn't need to?

You should reevaluate your life for having zero self respect

Her behavior wasnt even nearly enough to say she was in love with you, and it just shy of saying she was romantically interested, but i know for sure she at least likes you. i think if she didnt like you, she had multiple opportunities to easily lie and kill the momentum. but she was honest and said she liked minerals and recommended her sisters baking to you. Also, talking so much about your personal lives with so much detail, and she left the trailer for you and then asks your plans for the day? Totally unnecessary for her work and what i consider a sign of attraction.

but some holes puzzle me a bit, what did the older woman say to the girl in the trailer? "your knight in shining armor was asking for you"? "go talk to that guy or he will leave a bad review and i will take it out your paycheck"? also even if she was still too sick to hang out with you that night, it seems like a no brainer to at least send a text apologizing. maybe she got too sick?

i think you made it obvious you were interested in her, showing her rocks, asking where she is when she isnt there, calling the front desk to talk about lava cake.

her feeling are harder to read. i think theres 5 possible conclusions not in any order
1. she was just being as good a host to a traveler as possible. maybe she takes her work that seriously
2. she was a mossad agent sent by benjamin netanyahu to lower your moral
3. she's just a friendly person and likes meeting new people
4. she was interested romantically but got cock blocked by her being sick
5. she was interested romantically but just fumbled you outright. maybe by being too nervous to text or not even picking up on your attraction

On the contrary, I have enough self respect that I'm pretty selective in who I pursue. I did kind of veer into the creative writing just because it was so surreal. It's a short life so I hate when things happen without closure, especially when I actually bother trying

Thank you, that basically summarizes my exact thoughts about the situation and why it made no sense, including why she didn't text even just to apologize. I really have no idea what the woman said but it didn't seem like the type of place or people for your second suggestion, also she said she had been there for 7 years
