Please tell me all the reasons why I should NOT live in an apartment
>>

Bad for the long term but good for the short term.
>>

>Bad for the long term
Hmm?
>>
>>34924282
Meaning you dont want to rent forever
>>
>>34924288
Why would you, personally, not want to rent forever?
>>
>>34924282
nta anon but it's money you are paying for a service and not an asset so you outright just completely lose said money
Negatives
>aforementioned loss of value
>have to deal with other tenants/landlord and their rules
>bigger target for theft from your car if you own a car
>most apartments are owned by big corporations that do not give a fuck about the tenants and you are actively supporting that if you live in an apartment like that
>less square footage on average
>rent never falls, mortgages usually are fixed per month
Positives
>you don't have to worry about lawn care, you literally just get to exist and most things you have to worry about for external fixes and some more in-depth internal fixes are not your concern
>overall less money to afford since it's per lease and not a massive 30 year mortgage
>usually apartments can be in better locations that suburbs that are closer to cool things, this of course is dependent on the city
>more people to naturally meet on account of the apartment being more than just you most likely
>less credentials needed to prove you can handle a rent payment compared to a mortgage
>>
>>34924299
>not that anon anon
fuck
>>
>>34924308
lol don't be such a self hating grammar nazi :P
>>
>>34924292
Renting means you don't own the property, so that long-term rent money could have gone toward buying your own apartment or house.
>>
>>34924331
Even if you bought a house you still pay rent(property tax) to the government. What is even the point? Waste of money overall since you live in it for twenty years before dying.
>>
>>34924390
Property taxes cost less then 1 years rent. Buying a house also lets you make a profit when you sell, and buying an apartment is another great, affordable alternative.

If you find a unit you like, get a feel for the neighborhood first. Stick around for as long as you can with whoever is Showing it, try to keep them talking, and stall as long as possible before signing anything. Take notice of any neighbors with an unusual amount of activity at their house, anyone with a colicky baby, and if you're a man living alone you MIGHT be bothered by an amorous female neighbor who makes a lot of noise you can hear through walls. Have a ladder to check the attic for bad shit like old asbestos ducting. Bad landlords will never get this replaced.
>tweaker neighbor
They or their clientele are apt to steal your shit for a quick score. They might also get into the attic from their unit and rig the electrical wiring to steal power from you.
>inadequate insulation
Cheapest place I rented had single use grocery bags as insulation instead of fiberglass, got hot as a motherfucker in summer, ac would run nonstop just to reach a bearable temperature, high as fuck electricity bill. Might be bearable if you're not a fat person and you avoid food that raises cortisol levels in summer.

>They might also get into the attic from their unit and rig the electrical wiring to steal power from you.
What the fuuuuck? Seriously?
>>
>>34926046
What?!
>>
>>34924211
1. Annoying neighbors making noise or staring you down in the hall
2. Greater chance someone fucks with your packages
3. Maintenance guy is annoying
4. Delivery guy stares you down in the hall
5. Random internet improvements where they have to go into your space and drill holes and shit
6. Social isolation
7. Hearing women singing horrible karaoke
8. Hearing your neighbors have sex and forget to pull out
>>
>>34927361
All of these sounds kinda personal.
>>
>>34927378
They're just some things that can happen in an apartment. Not possible to know by taking a tour.
>>
>>34927361
Delivery guys all despise apartments because its a huge pain in the ass

Takes fucking forever and half the time its some heavy chunk of shit and they live on the top floor

I used to just leave packages at the base of the stairs lmao
>>
>>34927361
>Maintenance guy is annoying
Dude... one day I was at work, and the landlord's fucking annoying ass employee comes into my apartment, no notice btw, to spray some shit on my floor for cockroaches, and the motherfucker went into my bathroom and pissed in it. You know how I know? I have hidden cameras in my apartment. Who the fuck does that? I moved out immediately.
>>
>>34927361
>Hearing your neighbors have sex and forget to pull out
lol
>>
>>34924211
Been living in one for a year because my job has a residency requirement. Here's the downsides.
>have to pay rent
>have to walk up a lot of stairs
>no private outdoor area
>have nobody to clean up after me
>actually I dont have much reason to be tidy because my friends rarely visit and I am too self hating and introverted to have any women over
>cant blast amps/speakers loud
Here are the upsides
>have a good view outside my pc desk and where I practice music
>I can do whatever I want
>I can hang up all the edgy posters and flags I want
>I actually dont hear my neighbors much at all other than the occasional crying baby which I can easily cover up
>am in close distance to a bunch of bars and have a takeout restaurant right next door to my place
>I have a space that I can call my own
Its the nicest place ive ever rented. In college I used to hear everything my neighbors did. I would hear my neighbor having sex and arguing with his bpd girlfriend every morning and he would complain to the landlord about hearing me talk on discord all night. Living in an apartment is weird at first but its nice.
>>
>>34927390
Tell your mailing service to send packages directly to the post office. Sometimes it cost me a fee, Sometimes they're do it for free.
>>
>>34927428
>cant blast amps/speakers loud
>>34927361
>Hearing women singing horrible karaoke
I genuinely want to know why someone would live in an apartment knowing full well the walls are thin but still play loud music through their speakers.
Is it because they just don't give a shit? Aren't these the same people that go around in public blasting music from their phones around other people?

Nobody is saying DON'T live in an apartment.
>can't blast amps/speakers loud
but screams of passion are okay? If it bothers you so much, then you can troll them by blasting bad music. But then you risk provoking a feud, which is worse.
>>
>>34929384
>But then you risk provoking a feud, which is worse.
Man, this is so retarded. Isn't it just better to live in a nice neighborhood?
>>
Downsides are the high cost of rent plus potentially living with strangers. The latter is probably the biggest downside. Studio apts tend to be pretty expensive
Rooming with strangers just sucks. If it's one other person its ok but anything more than one is just hellish.
Other things that suck about renting: laundry machines not working or not maintained, landlords screwing you out of your security deposit, issues caused by other tenants which you don't have control over (e.g neighboring unit gets infested and then the infestation spreads to your own)
I think if you absolutely have to rent the only option that isn't hellish is finding a small house that's being rented out as a studio. But that is once again going to usually be more pricey
>>
It's like throwing money into the wind.
>>
>>34930065
Nice neighborhood means higher deposit, rent, and possibly having room mates. I assume OP meant living alone. Roomies would have to be vetted so that's extra work right there.
>>
>>34930181
Pissing money onto the floor
>>
>>34929217
I dont think the walls are that thin where I live and I try to be considerate, but I wont let my circumstances prevent me from doing what I like. I am kind of forced to live in an apartment for my job's residency requirement so its not like I am here for fun. The most obnoxious thing I do is practice flamenco guitar but I dont play too loudly past 10-11 pm. I absolutely love guitar and it is the main thing keeping me from killing myself so I dont care if it might inconvenience people occaisonally lol. I used to rent a place where I would hear my neighbor have sex every morning and it drove me absolutely insane because it would just remind me of how lonely I am lmao.
>>
>>34931548
>used to rent a place where I would hear my neighbor have sex every morning and it drove me absolutely insane because it would just remind me of how lonely I am lmao
oh my fucking god I cannot tell you how much I resonate with this
>>
>>34924211
Same goes for condos but the most annoying things are the fucking noise from idling cars and delivery vehicles and work vehicles and lawn mowing leaf blowing cleaning etc bullshit that is not under your control like in a house. Drives me fucking crazy. Today it was pressure washing. Karens getting in your business sucks too like the one guy who polices my fucking recycling habits. Plus all the other shit people mentioned before.
>>
>>34932109
>the fucking noise from idling cars and delivery vehicles and work vehicles and lawn mowing leaf blowing cleaning
I don't give a shit about any of that. What I give a shit about is hearing some subhuman's rap trap crap song blasting from their apartment like they're in a fucking night club.

>Karens getting in your business
There was this one bitch ass nigga that lived next to me for like two years. One day I overheard a conversation between him and one of the landlord's maintenance workers out in the hallway.
The guy was fucking bitching about me and how he never sees me leaving my apartment, and that I must be going in and out through my back windows. The fucking nerve of this piece of shit.
Like first of all, who fucking thinks about me like that that they give a shit what I do in my apartment? Second of all, how fucking dare you talk about me to some ass fuck right outside my apartment.
>>
Yeah
>>
>>34935131
I mean eventually
>>
>>34930181
What's the alternative? Don't have money to buy a house where I work.
>>
>>34931593
Seriously why is this a problem? Do you get upset when you see monkeys having sex at a zoo? Just observe them as if they were local fauna.
>>
>>34936792
>Seriously why is this a problem?
>>34931548
>because it would just remind me of how lonely I am lmao
>>
>>34936752
Really?
>>
>>34924282
Rent = 1700 - 3500
Mortgage = 130 - 750
Fully pay off =0
>renting is for goyim>>34924292
>>
>>34924211
>Please tell me all the reasons why I should NOT live in an apartment
Neighbors, roaches, neighbors, roaches, roaches, condo fees, corruption in condo fees, creepy neighbors, lack of privacy, more condo fees forever and ever.
>>
>>34940747
neighbors, roaches, neighbors, roaches
I don't wanna touch these neighbor's roaches
neighbors, roaches, neighbors, roaches
look at these neighbor's nasty roaches
>>
>>34940341
Yeah really
>>
>>34940879
kek
>>
>>34927361
if you live in a nice apartment (ie you buy a luxury condo) most of this shit is not a thing
>>
>>34924211
Suck ass maintenance and 0 pest control if you don't live in an area that prices out the riff raff. Those are the only unique problems. Most of the others you read in this thread are actually shared with home ownership.
>>
>>34945450
>and 0 pest control
I fucking hate it when they make pest control enter my apartment every 30 days
>>
>>34945485
Move to a higher income area with better apartments if you can afford it. Look for luxury apartments. If they have to spray every 30 days the problem will never be fixed and you'll always have roaches
>>
>>34945496
>Look for luxury apartments
This... this is the way
>>
>>34945521
It's the only way
>>
>>34932129
>I don't give a shit about any of that. What I give a shit about is hearing some subhuman's rap trap crap song blasting from their apartment like they're in a fucking night club.
When the delivery vehicles pull up they are always blasting sub bass bullshit music but luckily my neighbors don't
>>
>>34945329
I live in one and most of this stuff is the same. Never really roaches or mice though there have been some other bugs, and my neighbors mostly are too old to have loud secks
>>
>>34951124
What the fuck kinda deliveries are you getting? Amazon? I've never had an Amazon employee do that shit when delivering my packages.
>>
>>34924299
condo then, best of both worlds.
>>
>>34948238
THE FUCKING WAY
>>
>>34956371
The only fucking way man
>>
Neighbors. I just hate the possibility of coming across someone, in the elevator, having to say hi or whatever. It makes me not wanna go outside
>>
>>34940589
You still pay property tax
>>
>>34960321
oh my fucking god dude are you my twin? lol I want to live on an island away from everybody
>>
>>34960557
my fucking god
