years of struggling with multiple treatment-resistant mental illnesses have made me feel like I have no control over my life. I want to get back in control but everything I've tried has failed and I've reached a point where the very idea of it seems impossible. how do I get ovr this learned sense of helplessness

I mean if you feel like that then why not take control in a small way?
You can try and make one simple task yours.
Complete it consistently and you will start to build some integrity in yourself. Which in turn will allow you to feel like you are in control. The important thing to note is that you have to find methods like CBT or DBT which help you emotional regulate. If you don't control your mind then you are helpless.

If you have depression, do nortriptyline. If you have ADHD get stimulants.
