Is the choice of whether you do something or don’t do something simply a matter of the state of mind you’re in?Is this state of mind easily convince-able and mailable?I have certain bad habits I want to quit and certain good habits / hobbies I want to engage inHowever, I do the opposite of framing since the bad habits are things like doomscrolling and the hobbies are things that take effort like reading and writingI understand how to form good habits, but what should I do about the bad ones? Can I just convince myself not to do them or that I’m not the type of person who would do them? What I mean is, instead of it being a battle of NOT doing something and constantly worrying about the urge arising then fighting it, can I convince myself that the chances of it happening are 0 and move on from there Offensive instead of defensive I suppose
>>34970859replacing a habit is easier than removing a habit, removing a habit creates a void that needs filling, if you don't fill it you're a lot more likely to go back to the bad habit, if you replace the habit with something good or neutral you're more likely to stick with it.
>>34970871I see that makes senseI truly just wanna be more productive and do less doomscrolling and such but it feels extremely difficultI don’t get any actual enjoyment out of it in fact I dislike it but it’s addicting and makes me bored which in turn makes me scroll more
>>34970933also making the requirement to access the habit harder will push you away from it, phone locked after certain time, phone in black and white after certain time etc etc, the higher the barrier to entry is best. make the replacement barrier to entry low.
>>34970859>Is the choice of whether you do something or don’t do something simply a matter of the state of mind you’re in?This is essentially what determinism says. You do not truly possess free will, because they person you are is the result of a casual chain of events that were ultimately beyond your control. That does however not mean that everything is pointless and that you have no agency. Simply believing that you have agency is something that influences your state of mind. You should consciously try to think about your life, what your goals are and what will help you reach them and what is standing in your way. Do not think of your actions (or lack thereof) as lack of motivation and willpower, think of it this way: "what can I do to influence my state of mind so that I am more likely to make choices that align with my long-term goals?"An easy example would be someone who wants to work out more but can't commit to going to the gym. Examine what influences your state of mind and make changes that you can make with your current state of mind, e.g:>i skip the gym because i get too comfortable when i get home > bring gym clothes with you and go right after work>i skip the gym because i feel too tired > eat a light snack X hours before the gym so your energy will peak when it's time to make the choiceand so on. Try to figure out why you are successful or failing at something, and once you understand the mechanics behind your actions/state of mind then you can influence them.
>>34970957>You do not truly possess free willignore anything this moron has to say.
>>34970945Yeah locking my phone away at work helps with doomscrollingThe thing is at home I have unlimited access on my pc
>>34970859>Is the choice of whether you do something or don’t do something simply a matter of the state of mind you’re in?To some extent, but that state of mind can be modified by exercising or using heat exposure or going on a hike. Most bullshit advice is about fighting your thoughts but not about fighting where they're coming from (a bodily state of malaise).
>>34971142that state of malaise is probably the sort of self fulfilling prophecy i feel towards not wanting / being able to do anything
>>34970933>I truly just wanna be more productive and do less doomscrollingDon't turn on your computer/phone for an hour when you wake up. Take a walk, cook breakfast, read a book, play an instrument, do some stretches, whatever. Some console gaming might be okay if you stick to one game. The point isn't really to be an ascetic, the point is just to not overstimulate yourself in the morning. You really can't use your phone or computer at all though. There are paths wired in your brain that keep a side eye on that distracting tab that you're definitely not going to open.
>>34971893well i work a job and have hobbies on a pc so
>>34972069So wake up earlier.
>>34972116wake up at 4 am to take a walk and do bullshit just so when you get home and have free time you can focus moreok
>>34970933Doomscrolling / internet addiction replaced my binge drinking bar fly habits. I'm not a fat broke slob anymore, but I also don't get laid.Vaping replaced smoking. I taste food now and my cardio's much better, but I look way less cool.
>>34970967Explain to me how you truly have free will then
