Is having a career/vocation you feel proud of doing every day an unrealistic goal?
Everyone says "don't do the thing you like for a living" because you'll hate it. But how true is that really? It seems like cope to give the cognitive dissonance of having a soul sucking job some meaning.
I am currently discerning a career change (to Electrical Engineering) and studying intently to that end. But I am curious to have more opinions. Is it enough that the mortgage is paid another month? Should I be grateful for the opportunity to just putz around collecting a paycheck, even when it carries with it a feeling of tremendous guilt for doing nothing of substance?
I feel I am destined for excellence, but the truth of the matter remains blurred behind the veil of "do it faggot". What is the answer here? I feel stuck.

Jobs are only soul sucking when the conditions suck. Whether you do nothing of substance really depends on the job.
If you want a main takeaway is that your job is a portion of your life that helps pay for things. If you let it become your life then you have no life. You can feel proud of things you do outside of your job too, but there's nothing besides yourself that prevents you from being proud of your work, whether that's at a job or not.

No it isnt. 2 years ago I was working a tecunician job at a casino and I fucking hated EVERYTHING about it other than the aspect of fixing machines. I hated the industry, the clientele i interacted with, my employer,my hours, my pay, my benefits and found it all morally rotten. Now I am working a tech job related to a vital government service and I am proud of my work because it is conducive to helping people. I dont get paid as much as other tech people but the work is challenging, rewarding, and interesting. And no, there is nothing wrong with wanting more in life. This shit is hard to figure out but just keep on pushing through and looking for more oppurtunities.

I have a very cushy job. It lets me mostly slack off, but when I do work I typically enjoy what I do. But it doesn't make the world better in any meaningful way, it's not a calling for me. It pays the mortgage and that's all I need it to do.

As >>34971475 says, your job doesn't have to be your life. Seek fulfilment and meaning in your community. Find an organization, a hobby, a club that either does some good in the world or brings you joy or preferably both. And personally, I find a lot of fulfilment in my family and my daughter, though kids aren't for everyone.
