I just turned 40. Bought my first house, my wife announced she's divorcing me in order to get a free house. Shes sleeping with other guys and has never worked a full time job. We have three kids.
I explained everything to my management and they laid me off with a great 1 year pay severance package including tuition anywhere.
I really want to do a 2 year game programming course at college - focused on C++ and C#. I actually signed up for a 1 year carpentry course that teaches how to build houses.
I can still switch. I just don't know, its such a gamble. I am doing Javascript in free code camp and I really think I just want to program games, but with carpentry I could theoretically build decks for cash on weekends if I had tools and a car still.
I may end up just a guy renting a room and only owning a laptop. I will not do accounting again it makes me want to die. I wanna program games ... or build my own one room shack to live in.
What do you guys think? Should I stick to carpentry and do coding as a hobby? Or can I just dive into coding and be a hermit? My lawyer says I will have to pay this leech 60% of my after tax income and payments wont stop for 16-20 years.

2 years for game programming is a waste of time and money. You can easily self-study with a book or real project work and achieve it in a month or two.
So you can do both, I think.

I dunno about that. Im a nerd and I want to make games and play games and not much else..
Like, yeah cqroentry is cool but with games if I was a bum renting a room somewhere I could at least code and have projects on the go. With wood working id need a actual workshop

I’m a C# dev who does web-shit.

The coding industry is absolutely poop-tier at the moment and for the foresable future. Without work experience the door is effectively closed for anyone new looking to enter the field unless you are a top CS school young graduate.

Try something in healthcare but nothing in coding and even less so game-dev which is by far the worst sector of coding to be in.

You don’t even need to go to school anymore to learn this shit just buy a clause subscription and tell it to make what you want and teach you along the way.

Also carpentry is way better than computer science if you have genuine interest in that go for it and abandon all desires of having a game dev degree. AI can build and game that you want for you but it can’t build a home
