My friends ex-girlfriend (very recent breakup, less than a month) asked me to go hiking with her. When I suggested inviting more people from our friend group she said no let’s just keep it the two of us. How do I navigate this? I already agreed to go btw it was spur of the moment and I didn’t want to make things awkward by saying no, but I really don’t want to make things awkward with my friend by seeming like I’m trying to get with his ex.
>>34975415I mean why do you want to go?Do you want to be in a relationship with her?Personally I'd just be up front with her. Tell her that I like her as a friend and don't want to ruin my relationship with her ex. So we can go with a group or not at all.
>>34975415call your friend and explainbest case scenario:>he understandsworst case scenario:>he gets pissed, but you can still cancel the trip to try and salvage the situationif she asks why you cancelled, tell the truth that you value your friend and the trip is risking that friendshipbut you need to tell your friend, because you do not want him to find out from any third parties that makes it look like you went behind his back
>>34975438>>34975452What if she genuinely does just want to hike to hike and nothing more though? We’re all part of the same friend group and I feel I could almost be the one making it awkward if I refuse to hang out one on one with her.
>>34975493Why not ask her what her intentions are? Like "Hey, I've realized it's just us going on this hike. Is this just as friends?"
>>34975493And what if she just wants to have sex with you?You won't know until you confront her and ask. Also, why would anyone think it's weird? Is it normal for people in your hiking group to split off into pairs instead of doing stuff as a group?
>>34975415There is no officially recognized Residual Rights Period in which a person retains property rights over an Ex after a breakup. Is he free to look at other girls? Then she is free as well.
>>34975415Interesting depends if he's a fake friend or a true friend if he's a fake friend who would betray you given the opportunity then you should make a move on her otherwise don't.
>>34975936>There is no officially recognized Residual Rights Period in which a person retains property rights over an Ex after a breakup.(NTA) That is certainly true. But if seeing his ex with another man causes him pain, there is also nothing wrong with a friend not wanting to be responsible for that. If someone he doesn't know dates her, that's one thing, but if someone in the same friend group does, that means he's going to be constantly brought face to face with her on another man's arm, and be required to spend time with her, even if he doesn't want to try to be friends with her. That can make getting over her a lot harder. If the break up was a messy one, it'll be even worse. I don't think it's unreasonable for OP to be concerned about how his friend is going to feel. >>34975415>I really don’t want to make things awkward with my friend by seeming like I’m trying to get with his ex.But you *are* trying to get with his ex, right? She has asked you on what is obviously a date, and you said yes. You've got three options, here. 1) If you actually don't want to date her, then you should back out. Not because of your friend, but because if a woman asks you out and you're not interested, it isn't nice to lead her on. In that case tell her "Look, I'm sorry, but when I said yes it was because I was imagining a group of us going. Just the two of us feels very much like a date, and I'm not interested in you in that way."2) You could decide to date her anyway and not care what your friend thinks. 3) You could ask your friend how he feels about you dating her, and go ahead only if he's okay with it.
>>34976114>seeing his ex with another man causes him painThat means he's not a cuck, so he should be thankful to you for the practical demonstration. Also he should man the fuck up and move on.
>>34975506>>34975503I’m generally pretty hesitant to do anything that confrontational, what if I just go on the hike with her and I treat it as a regular hike? Also we’re not a hiking group, it’s just a regular college friend group and I mentioned liking to hike a few weeks ago
>>34975415If he is a true friend of yours its better to avoid any contact that creates a misunderstanding. There are billions of women you don't need this one. However, IF the two of you actually want each other and you are fine with ending your friendship then go ahead. BUT you shouldn't expect many in your friend group to support you. Be prepared to move on from that group.
>>34976231She’s also part of the friend group though. She joined after she started dating him but he told us it was a mutual breakup and he wanted everything to stay normal between us all and stay friends. So we all still hang out with her, and even hang out with her and not him if there’s a meetup and he is busy with homework or something. So I don’t know, maybe he would be fine with it and I’m the one making it weird. Since it’s normal for people in a friend group to do things one-on-one as well. I feel as long as I don’t try anything maybe it will be fine?
>>34975415You got a simple choice. So you want this lil hoe or do you want to continue being friends with this dude? Cause you can only pick one.
>>34976254Yo son, do not be retarded. This girl wants you. If you want her go for it but don't give me this retarded hot and cold bullshit.
>>34976258Continue being friends. Is there anyway to do that without backing out of the hike? >>34976261What’s the hot and cold part? I’m just explaining that she is part of our friend group and he also wants her to stay part of it.
>>34976278Dude are you a retarded faggot? Go on the hike, get laid. Wtf is your major malfunction??
>>34976297I didn’t have very many friends till very recently
>>34976304I mean look the chances are he'll be fine with it but maybe not. Assuming your a virgin or inexperienced, it's very much worth the risk. I myself have never had sex out in nature. Must be a cool experience...
>>34975415Two possibilities:>she wants 1 on 1 time with you so it can be datey>she wants 1 on 1 time with you because she really wants to ask you stuff about the exFor the first, women will rarely initiate hangouts with males in general, and the “should we bring other people” is the perfect chance for someone to ensure it is NOT a date. It’s even a deflection to prevent something from coming a date by saying “yeah sounds fun! let’s invite XYZ too!” The fact that she rejected this is telling. The second is still technically possible but a lot less likely, since she could just text you or even call about it once.>if you are interested in herThen this is a good sign but you should really get the OK from your friend.>if you are notThere is nothing wrong with>>34975503If she’s normal then she will say “hehe yes I wanna hang out with just you” (she wants you) or she has a chance to clarify “no I just like you as a friend.” Both would be welcome opportunities to make sure her intentions are not misread, because no one likes that. If she’s somehow offended then the problem as never you.
>>34976422Is there no chance she genuinely just wants to go as friends because she wants to be my friend?
>>34976903There is, but in that case there’s no need to stipulate that it be “just us”
