Thread for people who have been diagnosed with autism in their early childhood>be me>psychology student>have worked with autistic children before>notice weird traits in my 2.5 yo nephew's behavior>watches tiktoks of spinning fans for like 20 min>loves wheels and any spinning thing>loves to watch the washing machine>its okay with touch, but doesnt really get the sense of playing with other kids>its a bit hard to get his attention>looks up kinda late when we call him by his name, it even takes multiple repetitionNow, I dont really know if I should let my brother know about this. On one hand, the behavior could be improved with therapy, but on the other hand most of the therapy centers are trash, with ill prepared people (I have insider knowledge since I worked in 2 centers) and the stigma of growing up with a diagnosis could be worse than just living without knowingAnd honestly Im a bit more inclined to not tell themAlso, I may just be paranoid because he is still very young and those are not really strong indicators of autism
>>34977294So yeah, my question was: for anons who have been diagnosed early, how did that affect you? Have you felt less capable tham the other kids bc of your tism? Stupider?
I wouldn't say that being diagnosed early has affected me one way or the other. My case is somewhat unusual though, since I was diagnosed at 3, only for my parents to forget until I got reassessed (and rediagnosed) at 7. A big thing is that I never had ABA, which most autistic people consider abusive. If that's what you mean by therapy centers, then yeah, you're right to be worried about that. That being said, he's not even 3. I'm not a psychologist, but it feels weird to fret so much about somebody's behaviours being "off" when they're still a toddler.
was diagnosed early but my parents didn't tell me until i was around 8. never related to autistic people and have gotten over most of my problems. i had a sensory disorder for a couple years as a teen but got over it myself. therapy helped none. all people did when they knew i was autistic was treat me like a toddler. ive always felt superior to people because i was a "gifted" kid, it never affected my self esteem until i found out i was autistic
