I used to keep a hobby of audio recording live performances in full for musicians, and sending them a copy for free. I loved it, the touring bands and locals were pleased with it, and some of my recordings started sounding like they were worth the effort. I did it because many live show tapings and viewings were crucial to altering my perception to the possibilities of music, and how it can turn a room from just a venue to a sea of gratitude and love when the show goes REALLY well. Call me a fag or a sperg if you want, but it felt good, it felt altruistic, and it was giving back to the artists that gave me so much, or had much potential to grow, or were calling it quits. No artist has ever turned down a tape of themselves I offered them after the show, and about 95% of them are happy to permit audio recording the day of the show if asked personally.Anyways, a somewhat large show is coming up (artists that have headlined Coachella/won Grammys). I actually scouted the venue a couple months back, just waltzed on past the gates, and even had a chat with some of the stagehands about recording (they seemed bemused, but open to telling me about mixing console placement and physical changes to the place in the coming months). Then, I popped an email to the show promoter, who replied to my spiel with>Thanks for reaching out, but audio recording is unfortunately not allowed for this show.I get that no means no, and record labels and copyright are a scary legal area to push the boundaries of - but this is bullshit. They are not going around with security to snatch iPhones out of peoples' hands.I've determined three things can happen (cont.)
>>35007634 (cont.)>I show up with none of my audio recording gear and have an extremely heartwrenching time watching normies have a blast with nothing but blown-out 10 second iPhone clips to remember it by (might as well not go)>I show up with low-profile gear and risk a shitty/altogether ruined recording (if someone bumps into me hard, or I'm not in a good spot, or I'm not permitted to plug into the mixing console by a grumpy audio engineer)>I show up at all and I'm on a blacklist because I outed myself, and catch extra scrutiny at the gateI want to sell the ticket, but the resellers are taking way too long with listing it for sale. What do I do? I just wanted to be a friendly archivist...
>>35007634You will stop existing if you delete your social media
>>35007634>>35007636Go to the show. Don't record anything. Try to be in the moment.
>>35007659What do you mean by this? This isn't something I undertook for clout.>>35007665>Don't record anything. Try to be in the moment.Falls under option one. I don't want to go if I can't record it, and I'm not familiar with the headliner's music. If I can't participate in unison with the crowd, there's no chance I can be in the moment. Once I started this hobby, going back to showing up with nothing actually became extremely painful. My memory is also quite bad.
>>35007676You're being completely retarded. You need to experience what ite like to not film. You might find yourself enjoying it. I mean it's not like you've got anything better to do.
>>35007685>filmyou didn't read the post at all.
>>35007634Who are you planning to see?
>>35007686Same difference. Everything I said still counts. Don't be pedantic.
>>35007693>same differenceI wouldn't be holding a phone or camera in front of my eyes, audio recording (as opposed to filming) allows me to live in the moment anyways - mics on a stand or mics in a hat, I'm watching and listening to the performance with my own eyes and ears regardless. Not a matter of pedanticism.>You might find yourself enjoying itThe more fun I see others having while NOT recording, the more heartbreaking it is that they will not have anything worthy to remember it by.
>>35007676You are doing this for clout. You want the approval of the music people and maybe worm your way into the industry.
>>35007700>The more fun I see others having while NOT recording, the more heartbreaking it is that they will not have anything worthy to remember it by.This is retarded.Look bro it's all about how obvious your setup looks. If your carrying around a massive boom mic forget about it. But if it's just a small thing you can fit in a pocket just go for it.
>>35007704Look up Aadam Jacobs on archive.org and look at the view counts. Nothing reaches the thousands or even the high hundreds. This is for the kid that wasn't born yet who gets obsessed with a band before their time. I have those kinds of aspirations.>it felt good, it felt altruistic, and it was giving back to the artists that gave me so much, or had much potential to grow, or were calling it quits>>35007710>This is retarded. It already happened to me. I was retroactively told to remove my recording setup once by bumbling security and management, and it was one of the worst feelings I had ever felt in my life. I vowed to never put myself through a concert I couldn't preserve again.>if it's just a small thing you can fit in a pocket just go for it.That's what I'm thinking and I have gear for that, but since I already blew my cover with the show promoters, they might single me out from the line to get in and tell me to run my pockets. My name was on the email and on the ticket.
>>35007729>they might single me out from the line to get in and tell me to run my pockets.Yeah, that isn't going to happen. The people on the door are trying to get people though the door as quickly as possible, while making sure they have a ticket. Not only that but the door people aren't in contact with the promotors who have 100 other things to do besides worrying about some sperg with a mic. You'll be fine.
>>35007737>You'll be fine.I hope so. I'm not feeling particularly lucky about it. I guess the worst case scenario is that they tell me to turn around and bring it back to my car with some extra scolding. >sperg with a micif the audio engineer is nice and has a couple extra minutes of time, I won't even need a mic for a half-decent recording, just a field recorder and some XLR cables. A USB drive could even be viable (although not as reliable).
>>35007753Yeah. I wouldn't go asking the audio tech if you can do that. Just use your smaller setup, who is it your seeing?
>>35007760>I wouldn't go asking the audio techMost are surprisingly accommodating if you give them time to route the channels by showing up early. >Use your smaller setupIt's going to be a rowdy crowd. Falls under option 2 - my recording is kaput if my hat gets knocked off my head.>who is it you're seeing?Won't say, but they are pretty popular (Grammys and SNL-tier fame). I was more interested in the local opener, in any case.
>>35007769Is it the Bensons?
>>35007776
>>35007784You know the massive chart topping band, that are everywhere right now. People just can't stop talking about the Bensons. I see them everywhere, online, on tv
I sold the ticket after figuring out I made a mistake in listing it. There's a couple of other external and sad circumstances in my life that made me address it as a former hobby. I just didn't want the entire endeavor to be a money and time sink, so I considered the possibility of what to do if I did have to go. Thanks /adv/, my bad for asking
>>35007704>You want the approval of the music people and maybe worm your way into the industry. In the sense that they're open to being recorded by me for subsequent shows, yeah. I know of other filmers and recordists that have done this for much longer than me that have not parlayed this into climbing the social ladder - all of them prefer to stay behind the lens and stay where they are because they love it. Hell, some of them don't even want to be named when crediting the recording.I considered carrying the momentum of this hobby into an audio engineering certificate, but I don't trust myself to EQ properly, or account for issues I don't know how to identify with an untrained ear. Shitty life hit and all that momentum is gone, anyways.
>>35008111>>35008132OP. I think you'll blossom as a far more confident person if you just attacked people.
>>35007636i would go with lowkey gear. you say the artists are big/popular. they don't need the recording like the smaller artists you've done this for and won't appreciate it as much most likely, so not much is lost other than your own enjoyment for the best possible recording. but maybe let that go this time. you could also try emailing one of the artists directly that way you could go "over" the promoter, but might not be worth it since they probably have their own guy already. most ppl who i know do this are associated with the artist and known in the scene/liked by the bands, but i don't expect them to record big bands or like artists that have songs on the radio.also don't berate yourself for having passion for something. the people who are faggy are those who can only hate things and complain about other people having passion.
>>35008225>if you just attacked peopleI was forced into a lot of mixed martial arts/wrestling as a kid growing up in the No Tolerance era. What it taught me is that there's always a more skilled fighter than me and that all fights lead to pain on both sides. Basically a humiliation ritual at 12 to be put into a singlet and get destroyed by the coach's son who was 3 years younger and a good 30 lbs. lighter than me.>>35008241>they don't need the recording like the smaller artists you've done this forWhich is why option 0 was sell the ticket. >try emailing one of the artistsI did DM the opening act, who I'd tried recording before (got hat knocked off, wanted to redeem myself) and they gave me a vague "we'll circle back to this" sort of answer, which indicated the decision was out of their control.>also don't berate yourself for having passion for somethingIt's a useless passion in that it's a money sink (ticket prices, travel) and becomes a game of geometry and spatial-acoustic guesswork that can't be applied to any other setting (studios don't do this, unless you're obsessed with drum sounds like Albini was).
>>35008309You must attack people who are smaller than yourself.
>>35008320Did you even read what you're responding to? I got fucked up by someone much smaller than me over and over, and served as this kid's tomato can (boxing metaphor but w/e), because he was much more skilled than me at wrestling. He was smaller than me, by a lot. Shit was humiliating. Size can be easily overcome if you know what you're doing.>Kano Jigoro>Helio Gracie
>>35008326So fight children. You must.
>>35007634Wear some inconspicuous spy cam hat like picrel and record it
>>35007634Act like you own the place.
>>35007634What you have been doing is piracy, copyright violation and theft. That you have gotten away with it is entirely a salute to the generosity and naivete of the performers. You WILL be caught, sued for every penny you're worth, and prosecuted criminally (and quite possibly beaten up in an alley by some very big men). It is just a matter of when.
>>35009369>>35009529this has worked in the past but I'm pretty sure my hat would get knocked off my head at this particular show>>35010408thanks for sharing your gay fantasy
