I heard that you're not allowed to pet penguins because their feathers have a developed outer layer of oil that insulates them in the cold and petting them/touching them for an extended period of time will harm that layer exposing them to harsh conditions and make them generally less protected or something. The most insane thing about emperor penguins is that penguins on the whole are temperate birds that live in like, australia and new zealand. They didn't start as arctic birds and move up, they went south, found the literal coldest place on the planet, and said "this'll work"

Once they reach maturity it is a literal nonstop cycle of either standing still trying to not freeze to death as you slowly starve, then going out and attempting to gorge yourself to bursting so you can survive the next bout of doing it again. If either mate messes up the timing, the baby starves and dies, and it's all for nothing. They're barely even social, you watch them huddled up and none of them are talking to each other, because that would take energy and make them starve to death faster. They are such slaves to this reproductive process that mothers that lose their chicks will go into a grief stricken panic, fighting other mothers to kidnap their chicks and raise it as their own, often killing the chick in their wild hysteric group fights over them.
