General for the discussion of rodent care with a focus on rats3 year old editionPic rel is Burroughs taken in June who passed on Saturday at about 3 years old>Rats need love >Rats need companionship >Rats need free roam time >Other rodents welcome Rat first aid: http://neratsociety.co.uk/articles/firstaid.shtml Good and bad food: https://squeaksandnibbles.com/safe-foods-for-rats/
>>5061960Bless this thread.
NY rats are getting crazy.
Thank you for restarting the thread. I'm so happy with how many rat lovers there were in the last one.
I work at a restaurant that has rat poison outside. They also sometimes spray some different kind of nasty poison into rat holes.Right now there's a big rat living under the cardboard dumpster. I've been giving him croissants and a water dish.Should I discretely place a zap trap inside the fence around the dumpsters to keep him from going through a slow and agonizing death? I don't know what to do. What do you think?
>>5062314>picthat shit makes me so sad v_v
>Rats need love >Rats need companionship >Rats need free roam time hooman need that too *smooch*
felt bad for 2 fishtank rat babies on craigslist, met up and got them to eventually integrate with my older men, couldn't get a look at the second one's genitals because it was nervous, then i get home and discover she's a girl. I'm thinking it's overtheyre both 4-8 weeks old by my guess and she's looking suspiciously round. hopefully somebody local who breeds is willing to trade me for a boy and won't feed her to snakes, don't know if a spay is possible that young and it would be expensive as shit if they could
>>5062314Can you try to lure him out and relocate him? If you've been placing food, maybe he's getting used to you
>>5062617I've heard that rodents relocated to an unfamiliar area usually don't last long.
>>5062314If they poison the rats and there are still rats, there's a good chance that those rats are immune to the poison. They are basically feeding them.
>>5062314Damn anon that pic. Without the text it's the usual edge lord stuff I move on by but damn!In terms of dealing with wild rats >>>/diy/ has a stupid question thread perfect for this. However, an important tip left out is ensuring there are no sources of food for them, this is the best way to deal with to ensure they aren't around
I am DIS-CHEESED at the lack of rodent posting.
>>5063721i don't wanna repost too much, even though these threads are slow and gritty
you'd think rats would be the ultimate disease resistant lifeform but if the rats subreddit is anything to go by they're about as healthy as an inbred pug
>>5063856doesn't help that most pet rats are from feeder mills and have dogshit genetics
>>5063839>sneaky-plotting yes yes
Local shelter got a bunch of rats... I've been thinking of getting some. If I go there I know I will immediately want to take them home.
>>5063894this rat is responsible for the gravitational orbit of the earth
I've recently gained a desire to get pet rats, but I don't think that I could handle the short lifespans. I haven't had a dog in years because I couldn't handle that, and rats are so much shorter
>>5064002Unless they're a new litter you're taking on a shorter time with them and risk poor ownership / breeding but the shelter should be up front about that otherwise they risk getting them back. If they are from a bad owner etc but you are prepared to be more patient, go for it. I've had a few rescues and while they've taken more work, they have been worth it in the long run. Talk to the shelter and if you feel comfortable with it, enjoy and come here for advice when needed. >>5064218It's a hard one to get used to and did take me a while. Each death sucks but you learn to accept their timescale. I just had a guy pass a little before 3 years old (pic in OP) and while I miss him it was easier to see him go peacefully at a very old age
pretty sure one of my boys has a zymbals gland tumor, it's in the right place and the mass is firma while ago he had a lump that disappeared overnight before i could schedule the vet so maybe it will be like that but probably nothe's barely even one and a half, i was really hoping he would make at least 2 and then die in his sleep or something so i wouldn't have to make the choice to euthanize
>>5064218it's really not for the faint of heart, i'd love to try but i'm also worried about burgeoning vet bills for these short-lived critters
>>5064218Yea same, I started looking around the internet to see if someone succeeded in breeding a long-lived line of rets but haven't found anything. We can have dogs smashed and slammed every which way, and scale-less ball pythons, but not rats that live for 5+ years. Sad.
>>5064469got home after work and he has bloody discharge in his ear canal and is walking like he's drunk. i hope there's an emergency vet open on sundays because i really don't want him to go through when it gets worse. it might be fucked up but I'm praying he goes in his sleep so he doesn't have to go through the pain and stress and i don't have to see him declinethis is my first photo of him i would smash my nuts with a brick over and over again to get him back to healthy
>>5064617>i would smash my nuts with a brick over and over again to get him back to healthyI'm sorry you have to go through this, anon. I know the feeling.
>>5061960RIP OP's RattoF
>>5064617Red/Brown discharge can be porphyrin, not great but usually a sign of infectionAt that age, surgery is likely an option too but listen to the vetI hope you're goes well for you anon, best of luck to you and ratbro
>>5065300confirmed ZGT, he is no longer with us. i recently got new babies so i will be staying occupied but i still miss him
>>5065763A very handsome lad. It will always never be enough time. My condolences, anon.
>>5065763>the rat cycle continuesThey will always live on in your heart and you will look back mostly with happinessI'm really struggling to find a good breeder in my area at the moment and might be down to one soon! I've a 3 year old losing weight and very much slowing down, the other is a rescue and on vet advice is isolated due to a skin condition and mobility issuesI know I'm going to have a big empty cage looking at me soon
>>5067028what a weird looking banana
>>5067038It's not a banana, it's.. it's.. it's a potato, you swine!
I WILL SNIF YOU, HOOMAN, UNTIL YOUR SCENT IS UNDERSTOOD
>>5067028>rats can have their own bodyweight in banana as a treat-snack :)
I’d very much like to breed rodents for my future pet snake and lizard I don’t want to go full sadistic is there any type of rat or mouse that as a tendency to be assholes to there own like a type of rat other rats would hate
>>5067238urge to stroke ratto is rising>tfw no ratto to stroke
>>5067266I'm not so sure a fully-grown anaconda would do well in NYC
>>5067266Not really, I'd suggest politicians but I think they might poison the poor snake
>>5067263A rat suspiciously shaped like a banana typed this post
>>5061960Have they bred rats that live as long as dogs yet?Friggin love the the little dudes, but I'm a fuckin weirdo and it takes me a while to actually bond with things. I don't want to get something only to just start getting attached and have it croak on me, y'know?
>>5068336Not really, Gambian pouched rats live up to 5 years and are similarly friendly & social like fancy ratsThere are lab rats bred to live up to 5 years but you need to be a registered lab to get them. Further proof these scientist cunts aren't here to make our lives better. Trust the science? When they trust me with a 5 year rat!
>>5068696I suppose they're afraid of super rats escaping into the wild and taking over the earth with their lengthier lifespans. I, for one, would welcome our rat overlords.
>>5068696Kiked once again
>>5064218these guys and jumping spiders have roughly the same lifespans, and they're so goddamn smart. what a cruel world
>>5068696>similarly friendly & social like fancy ratsThey're not, though; that's the problem with them. Gambos are a lot more independent and aloof than fancy rats, they're closer to raccoons or cats than anything.
>>5068944I've had betta fishes that outlived some of my rats. It's enough to drive a man to drink.
>>5067503I miss stroking my boys
whats the longest a rat can be pregnant for?ive had a rat for almost 3.5 weeks and i have a suspicion shes pregnant but its not obvious and its been way too long
>>5070191>About 23 days or just under 3.5 weeksIf she's not pregnant and has abdominal swelling, get them to a vet
Went to see some rats for adoption today. The two I was most interested in came from the same home but the staff said they had to be separated now because they started fighting. Seemed unusual to me. They were both sleeping so I didn't get to actually see them.
>>5070779In my experience they grow out of it unless they've got underlying issues e.g. one of my guys has over active sebaceous glands and gets easily irritated by other rats and it's alone on vet advice.Any bite marks etc on them?
>>5071774I couldn't tell. They were both hidden and sleeping. These girls I think were about a year old. I think it could just be the stress of being in a shitty cage in a shelter but I am kinda wary of adopting fighting rats as a first time owner.
>>5072219Different anon, but I suggest getting baby rats. Unironically, craigslist has some people selling baby rats sometimes and I'd say consider that for your options. I've gotten mine from Craigslist, Petco, and Feeder and had the best experience with the craigslist since they were loved from the start.Having had a few generations of rats, I prefer getting them as young as possible as time flies and a year old couple of girls could be closer to death than you would hope for as a first time owner.
>>5072419>getting them as young as possible as time flies and a year old couple of girls could be closer to death than you would hope forThis is a very good point, it's worth considering them as rescues and you don't start with rescues
>>5064469one of my boys just turned 2 and last week he suddenly had a lump the size of my thumb on his left side. Picked him up today and found a second lump the size of a marble on his right side that wasn't there 2 days ago. Fucking sucks :(
>>5074481>2 years like clock workGet them to a vet, it might just be for palliative care but Burroughs in my OP was 1yr 10 months when he had 3 quick growing lumps out, they did come back but he lived about 8 more months. It sounds like they are growing quick so, act soon. Be prepared to get them some treats and you spend good quality time together
burroughs is a nice name 4 a rat, i salute him op
I keep hearing about all kinds of different successful longevity experiments for rats, but did they ever try to combine them all? I keep searching papers and articles, and keep finding nothing. Anyone have any idea?
did you know that there are mice living inside your walls right now?
>>5075125But i don’t own a cat. There’s nothing to attract mice. I do monthly urine checks and have baited live catch stations all over and there are 0 rodents
>>5075125first world countries build their walls out of concrete so no
Why did God not give them thumbs? Was he afraid they would be too powerful?
>>5075857If primates didn't exist, I think either rats or raccoons would be the animals most likely to evolve into a human-like society.
>>5061960Will female rats get upset or depressed if I take their babies away without them seeing me do it?
is my new rat pregnant or just chunky?
>>5075857>>5075864It's not just the thumbs, human communication is far more advanced than any other species. Nothing we have observed in animals even comes close. I don't know if rats have the potential for communication as sophisticated and deep as ours
>>5077109fr fr no cap
>>5076478Rats have naturally round bellies, that's just her normal anatomy
You will live in ze ratcageYou will run on ze mouse wheelYou will be picked up for no reason and kissed repeatedlyYou will own no cheese, and you will be boggling
>>5076478can't tell just yet
>be last night >get woken up by one of my rats screaming >literally shrieking in agony >stumble out of bed and run to their cage >screaming immediately stops >both rats are calmly sitting in their hammock Why the fuck would this happen? Don't tell me I dreamt it, I definitely heard the screaming when I was awake.
>>5076312I think you need to research breeding a bit too pin that down and/or wait for someone with good breeding experience >>5077109https://youtu.be/25LYVxTUZhMMore than you might think but not really enough>>5077482I was thinking something like this when feeding my guy mealwormsAnyone got any experience with an underweight rat? He's not foraging but will eat what I hand him, we'be got him on a fatty diet as he's just skin and bone. He's got a lot of issues already and I'm wondering if he never really learnt to dig through his food bowl or if his mobility issues give him problems while eating as he can't balance on his back legs
Never had a pet rat but I think they're cute as fuck. It makes me sad how short lived they are, don't think I could handle the pain of getting one and having to say goodbye so soon.
>>5077576Time for rat CCTV
>>5077992I dont want to breed on a mass scale, I just want some successor rats when mine get old but Im thinking of just feeding the excess ones to a snake or turtle
>>5077576They're doing the rat version of those tiktok retards screaming HELP HELP ME in public
>>5077576Sorry, that was me, stubbed my toe
>>5078389>feeding the excessOr look for people to adopt via market place etc.?
I love Popcorn so goddamned muchI tried to play with him this morning took him out on the couch and he scared the fuck out of my dog and then jumped off and ran behind the couch and tried to run in the laundry room. His favorite thing is to escape and go to like 5 places: behind the kitchen hutch, behind the fridge (TERRIBLE! NAUGHTY), the bedroom closet or under/on the bed. He has climbed into bed with me like 5 times I wake up and suddenly he's just there. I weigh down the lid but he pushes it off he is a Hulk

>>5079759Thank youHe is so pissy tonight I changed his cage but don't have new sand for him but kept the sand bath in there. He keeps running into the empty sand bath and "popcorning" in nothing especially because I played with him (he always liked to bathe to get the human scent off him afterwards). My son craves the sand but has none I feel soooo bad I'm getting it tomorrow

where do rats go when it gets cold and snowy outside?
>>5083556walls
>>5062504You really shouldn't, "just existing" also means destroying our supplies of food, weakening the sheltets we live in, and giving us diseasesIt's not like we kill them if they don't intrude on our territories or something Fuck, the predators that feed on them are significantly crueler than we are to wild mice
>>5062314>picMaybe we could've been friends, if you had only taken what you eat and didn't spread plague-ridden shits all over our grain stockpiles
>>5083800>destroy food supplies and spread disease True but I don't see justification for glue traps, there are better ways to deal with the problem>destroy shelterMaintain your shit, the seasons are going to do this too. Don't store rubbish, food waste adequately and don't have bird food too close to buildings. The biggest reason for any pest to be in your shit is because it's easier than natural environs, keep clean and patch holes in buildings ASAP See >>>/diy/ for good advice>predatorsDepends on the predator, a lot of predatory birds try kill quick so they can carry it away. Cats, prove your point. Some dogs tooIsn't being human to try be better than our animal selves, shouldn't we do better than leaving any animal to starve to death glued to the ground?
I recently got a trio of pet female rats. One of them, my largest one, is the one who is most acclimated to me. For the last few days I've got her to climb up my arm out of her cage and run over my shoulders and down my other arm to get a treat and then she runs it back into her cage.Tonight I decided to stand up and close the cage while she was on my shoulders. Was this a good idea? She's was pretty active up there, and was sniffing my ears, beard and eyes and stuff so I don't she was terrified of it or anything, but am I moving too fast? I've only had them since just after thanksgiving. I don't want to suddenly make her and them over all lose trust. I got her to lick some baby food off my finger but she didn't want any part of solid treats up there.
>>5084349Trust only builds. If they didn't like it they would hang down your shoulder looking to slide down, always keep an arm free to catch them thoIf they didn't like it you'd know and they might sulk in their cage for up to 20 minutes but usually will forgive you after a treatAre they getting much free roam time?
>>5084369She was sliding down my arm at first, but stopped after a few times when I just keep making a loop with my arms to stop her from falling.>Are they getting much free roam time A little bit but not as much as they should. Do have cats and they are assholes and knock down the cardboard enclosure I made so I need to get something a little more sturdy before I can do more. If/when she crawls on me like that again I'll probably take her into another room for it,same with the others when they are more used to my hands I guess.
>>5084370Sounds like she likes it so but take it easy and be ready to catch at anytime. They can be real dumbasses with their jumpsWatch the cats, they're devious bastards and cardboard won't stop them
I saw rats swimming and playing at the edge of a local lake, just as the sun faded into dusk.

>>5074481Update on this dude. Vet didn't think he'd make it through surgery so had just been keeping him comfy as I could while waiting to see what would happen. He had been pretty active and normal just running around with 2 tumors but they just slowly kept getting bigger and he kept getting worse. He started just falling all over the place today and was making clicking sounds when breathing so took him to the ER vet tonight and said goodbye. Rip badger, you were a real rat bro
>>5088051Sorry for your loss
>>5088051The breathing is the real warning and you took them at the right time. It's the last thing to start failing and there was more going on with kidneys & liver etc. if the breathing was bad. It gets easier with time but give yourself space to grieve >>5087235 Beaker came back from the vet yesterday, his breathing improved enough for the vet to diagnose a heart problem. Common for any mammal with dwarfism. He passed last night buried in my shirt getting pets. He was nearly 2 which is great for a rat in his condition!

will girls think less of me if I get a pet rat?
>>5090902I don't think girls could think less of you anon>now the cruel joke is out of the wayIt won't really change much, it'll be an interest/hobby to talk about. It will freak some chicks out and others will be smitten with the small furry animal.Really ask in >>>/adv/ but trying to be someone your not, won't make you happy and using animals to do it also brings them down with you. So don't get rats to get girls, get rats if you want a furry bro with a short life span
>>5090902You should get 2-3 because one rat will suffer due to isolation. And please do the proper research before owning an animal since this is pretty basic rat knowledge. Most rat owners are women and women really appreciate when males take an interest in what they also like, so if you can find one who's also a rat owner it'll help be similar ground for you both to connect on.Women care a lot about how much thought you put into something, and they'll become disinterested and critical of you if you do not take that time. This is just a simple fact of how women operate.

>>5090902this >>5091285 is pretty accurate. if she is a cool lady, especially if she also owns rats, she will likely appreciate that you care deeply for small creatures. being kind to animals is very important to women. but you can't half-ass it. you gotta truly love your rats and give them the best life possible.
I have 3 feeder rats I ended up adopting 2 years ago because my idiot brother in Iaw kept buying them to feed his snake that refused to eat them and my wife felt bad.Long story short, I love the little dudes and rats in general now. I finally found a breeder near me for some Dumbo Rex babies and ended up with an addition free Dumbo because he was the last baby and the breeder didn't want him to be alone.Had them about 3 weeks now and I introduced them in an empty pin after a quarantine period and they all got along fine, but after cleaning the cage and putting them together one of the babies got dominated and now he's being a little weenie and shrieking every time he sees one of the big boys. It wasn't even a fight, just normal pinning and dominance behavior but it spooked him pretty bad.I seperated them again and gave it a week but he still has PTSD. Should I even bother trying to integrate them again?Picrel is the baby with PTSD.
Still waiting to find females to adopt. I've never had rats before, but every time I see some in shelters they are male. I am worried about boys being too smelly.

He's playing with his brothers and both pinning and being pinned without issues so I don't get what's going on.Thanks for the advice.

>>5101951I'll pour a teeny shot for the little guySorry for your loss, I hope he got a good ending with you5 years as far as I know, is pretty good for degus
have you ever had a rat that did not grow hardly at all? i have a 5-6 month old male who has stayed tiny while his littermate is near the same size as my adults. he's been getting the same amount of food as the others and isn't sick, can they have partial dwarfism? or just be runts?
Any experiences with using aspirin for rats? I read something about 100mg/kg being suitable but not confident if I should go try it. My old man has lost his leg mobility over time but one of the back legs has swollen up yesterday and it seems to hurt. Earliest vet time in 3 days and I can't just watch him suffer for that long. (gif form when his feets were still doing ok...)
>>5102622>partial dwarfismProlly. >>5087235 this guy and his bro had itWatch out for heart conditions, not urgent but get them to a vet for a check up
>>5102690Do not give your rat an ulcerative, call your vet and explain the situation. They maybe able to do an emergency appointment or advise better than aspirin. Do not medicate your rat without veterinary instruction, their physiology and immune systems are different from oursYou can change the cage layout to make sure they need to climb as little as possible and massage around the area to help the blood flow as long as they don't show signs of pain
>>5076478I wonder what happened to anon's rat and if she's actually preggers
>>5102690Did you get them to the vet yet?
>>5062314>rat poison outsideBro just realized today, the vitamin d is rat poison
work in pest control. feel bad for each kill i get but at the same time i think there's a place for everything and for rats that place is well maintained sewers.does that make me evil?
Does this board have a general for talking about gebrils? I'm taking care of someone else's for a few months and wanted to ask some questions about them
>>5105341We try to also be a rodent general thread here but it's slow for replies to not-rat questionsAsk here and we'll do the best we can
If God gave me three wishes one of them would be for rats to live healthy for ten years or so. Hopefully one day genetic engineering allows us to help our rodent friends out.
>>5092154rule 1: be attractiverule 2: don't be unnatractiveif chad has pet rats it's quirky and adorable, if you have pet rats it's weird and offputting
>>5061960Have that rat "taken care of." lol. kek.
>>5105935There's an irony in giving up on God to wait for science but the other side, God helps those who help themselvesI guess you gotta study genetic engineering now anon
>>5062417Thank you for always posting that image. I needed it today.
I would really enjoy rats more if they weren't absolute high maintenance piss and shit everywhere machinesWish you could just litter train them like cats and let them roam the house
>>5107214You can though, it's not even that hard. The problem with permanent free roam rats is that they chew everything and don't understand the concept of "no", not that they piss and shit.
Look, I like skaven as much as the next guy, but why are rat civilisations in fiction always dirty, diseased, ugly, chaotic, violent and primitive? Rats obsessively groom themselves and each other. They're among the only animals empirically proven to show compassion and selflessness. They live peacefully with each other and solve conflict with minimal bloodshed. They're highly intelligent. They like being comfy, chilling and sleeping but also love having fun and exploring. If anything, rats should be fae-like beings. Capable of advanced magic or technology depending on the setting, living in a peaceful and aesthetically pleasing society with a high focus on entertainment and leisure, generally positively inclined towards humans and enjoy trading with them but also a bit capricious and sometimes mess with them just a little.
>>5094748Squirrels are demonic beings who don't like nice things. They exist to pointlessly seethe and mald. If they tried to live in human habitations, there would probably be no squirrels within a generation. I have no clue how rats are so great and squirrels are so bad.

>>5107558Thank you for providing an example of how rats in fiction should be depicted going forward
>>5107257Rats should be the elves of animal fantasy, squirrels can be wood elves.
>>5061960I hate rats
