NY rats are getting crazy.

Thank you for restarting the thread. I'm so happy with how many rat lovers there were in the last one.

I work at a restaurant that has rat poison outside. They also sometimes spray some different kind of nasty poison into rat holes.

Right now there's a big rat living under the cardboard dumpster. I've been giving him croissants and a water dish.

Should I discretely place a zap trap inside the fence around the dumpsters to keep him from going through a slow and agonizing death? I don't know what to do. What do you think?

felt bad for 2 fishtank rat babies on craigslist, met up and got them to eventually integrate with my older men, couldn't get a look at the second one's genitals because it was nervous, then i get home and discover she's a girl. I'm thinking it's over
theyre both 4-8 weeks old by my guess and she's looking suspiciously round. hopefully somebody local who breeds is willing to trade me for a boy and won't feed her to snakes, don't know if a spay is possible that young and it would be expensive as shit if they could
>>
>>5062314
Can you try to lure him out and relocate him? If you've been placing food, maybe he's getting used to you
>>
>>5062617
I've heard that rodents relocated to an unfamiliar area usually don't last long.
>>
>>5062314
If they poison the rats and there are still rats, there's a good chance that those rats are immune to the poison. They are basically feeding them.
>>
>>5062314
Damn anon that pic. Without the text it's the usual edge lord stuff I move on by but damn!
In terms of dealing with wild rats >>>/diy/ has a stupid question thread perfect for this. However, an important tip left out is ensuring there are no sources of food for them, this is the best way to deal with to ensure they aren't around

you'd think rats would be the ultimate disease resistant lifeform but if the rats subreddit is anything to go by they're about as healthy as an inbred pug

doesn't help that most pet rats are from feeder mills and have dogshit genetics

Local shelter got a bunch of rats... I've been thinking of getting some. If I go there I know I will immediately want to take them home.
>>
>>5063894
this rat is responsible for the gravitational orbit of the earth
>>
I've recently gained a desire to get pet rats, but I don't think that I could handle the short lifespans. I haven't had a dog in years because I couldn't handle that, and rats are so much shorter
>>
>>5064002
Unless they're a new litter you're taking on a shorter time with them and risk poor ownership / breeding but the shelter should be up front about that otherwise they risk getting them back. If they are from a bad owner etc but you are prepared to be more patient, go for it. I've had a few rescues and while they've taken more work, they have been worth it in the long run. Talk to the shelter and if you feel comfortable with it, enjoy and come here for advice when needed.
>>5064218
It's a hard one to get used to and did take me a while. Each death sucks but you learn to accept their timescale. I just had a guy pass a little before 3 years old (pic in OP) and while I miss him it was easier to see him go peacefully at a very old age
>>
pretty sure one of my boys has a zymbals gland tumor, it's in the right place and the mass is firm
a while ago he had a lump that disappeared overnight before i could schedule the vet so maybe it will be like that but probably not
he's barely even one and a half, i was really hoping he would make at least 2 and then die in his sleep or something so i wouldn't have to make the choice to euthanize
>>
>>5064218
it's really not for the faint of heart, i'd love to try but i'm also worried about burgeoning vet bills for these short-lived critters
>>
>>5064218
Yea same, I started looking around the internet to see if someone succeeded in breeding a long-lived line of rets but haven't found anything. We can have dogs smashed and slammed every which way, and scale-less ball pythons, but not rats that live for 5+ years. Sad.

got home after work and he has bloody discharge in his ear canal and is walking like he's drunk. i hope there's an emergency vet open on sundays because i really don't want him to go through when it gets worse. it might be fucked up but I'm praying he goes in his sleep so he doesn't have to go through the pain and stress and i don't have to see him decline
this is my first photo of him i would smash my nuts with a brick over and over again to get him back to healthy

>>
>>5064617
Red/Brown discharge can be porphyrin, not great but usually a sign of infection
At that age, surgery is likely an option too but listen to the vet
I hope you're goes well for you anon, best of luck to you and ratbro

>the rat cycle continues
They will always live on in your heart and you will look back mostly with happiness
I'm really struggling to find a good breeder in my area at the moment and might be down to one soon! I've a 3 year old losing weight and very much slowing down, the other is a rescue and on vet advice is isolated due to a skin condition and mobility issues
I know I'm going to have a big empty cage looking at me soon

Have they bred rats that live as long as dogs yet?

Friggin love the the little dudes, but I'm a fuckin weirdo and it takes me a while to actually bond with things. I don't want to get something only to just start getting attached and have it croak on me, y'know?
>>
>>5068336
Not really, Gambian pouched rats live up to 5 years and are similarly friendly & social like fancy rats
There are lab rats bred to live up to 5 years but you need to be a registered lab to get them. Further proof these scientist cunts aren't here to make our lives better. Trust the science? When they trust me with a 5 year rat!
>>
>>5068696
I suppose they're afraid of super rats escaping into the wild and taking over the earth with their lengthier lifespans. I, for one, would welcome our rat overlords.

They're not, though; that's the problem with them. Gambos are a lot more independent and aloof than fancy rats, they're closer to raccoons or cats than anything.

whats the longest a rat can be pregnant for?
ive had a rat for almost 3.5 weeks and i have a suspicion shes pregnant but its not obvious and its been way too long
>>
>>5070191
>About 23 days or just under 3.5 weeks
If she's not pregnant and has abdominal swelling, get them to a vet
>>
Went to see some rats for adoption today. The two I was most interested in came from the same home but the staff said they had to be separated now because they started fighting. Seemed unusual to me. They were both sleeping so I didn't get to actually see them.
>>
>>5070779
In my experience they grow out of it unless they've got underlying issues e.g. one of my guys has over active sebaceous glands and gets easily irritated by other rats and it's alone on vet advice.
Any bite marks etc on them?
>>
>>5071774
I couldn't tell. They were both hidden and sleeping. These girls I think were about a year old. I think it could just be the stress of being in a shitty cage in a shelter but I am kinda wary of adopting fighting rats as a first time owner.
>>
>>5072219
Different anon, but I suggest getting baby rats. Unironically, craigslist has some people selling baby rats sometimes and I'd say consider that for your options. I've gotten mine from Craigslist, Petco, and Feeder and had the best experience with the craigslist since they were loved from the start.

Having had a few generations of rats, I prefer getting them as young as possible as time flies and a year old couple of girls could be closer to death than you would hope for as a first time owner.
>>
>>5072419
>getting them as young as possible as time flies and a year old couple of girls could be closer to death than you would hope for
This is a very good point, it's worth considering them as rescues and you don't start with rescues

one of my boys just turned 2 and last week he suddenly had a lump the size of my thumb on his left side. Picked him up today and found a second lump the size of a marble on his right side that wasn't there 2 days ago. Fucking sucks :(
