Moss & Lichen Edition

previously on /herp/: >>5093568

This thread is dedicated to all animals of the Reptilia and Amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

My blue tongue woke up today, I hope for good this time. He's been sleeping underground for months, broken up into 2 week stretches.

Thoughts on multi species vivariums?
>>
>>5108608
generally only acceptable if those 'other species' are microfauna.
>>
>>5108608
obviously requires something larger than you'd keep either species in on its own, but pretty much everything else depends on what species are being cohabbed, which varies between "they're usually found together in the wild anyway" to "one will almost certainly immediately eat the other."
>>
>>5108608
If the point is the challenge in making something large enough and suitable to house both in an effective way then yes i guess. However, multi-species is most commonly desired by people who think combining two or more will result in some sort of greater interaction potential in a social dynamic sort of way. Like if you were to raise a dog and cat together there would be some friendship or something extra there. This does not happen with reptiles. For reptiles they either completely ignore each other or they kill each other, those are the two options. For this reason it's strongly recommended, if you desire two different species, to house them separately. You can put the tanks side by side and have both right there without the possibility that you find one dead in the morning.

I heard dart frogs benefit from cohabitation with mourning geckos

Frogs will eat literally anything that moves.
Back in the 80s, my parents had a couple of separate aquariums - frogs next to fish. They were both left without a secure lid at one point and the frogs were very well-fed for a day and the fish were mysteriously all missing thereafter.
>>
>>5108801
how the hell is it gonna swallow that whole lizard.
>>
>>5108828
that isnt a thought that occurs to a frog when it tries to eat something.

Morphmarket needs better filters so I can get rid of the hundreds of ball python ads
>>
>>5109264
They have a filter exactly for that, though.
Search under "Category - excluded categories". You can even multi-select this field, so you can dodge the crested geckos, etc. as well.

>Decide to just say fuck it and clear my bed
>Put him out on the top and let him twitch and spin in cricles
>Starts nipping his hands or tail but doesn't latch or break skin
>Past 3 days went fine, notice him being less twitchy already
>Except now he's breaking skin
>Bit his own fingers and now there's some blood, not alot but he cut it
>Bit his tail and tried to to an oroborous death roll
I don't know what to do. I love him, but he's such a fucking pain in the ass in all aspects. Eats alot, shit's alot, constantly bites my hand and fucks my fingers up from hunger strikes because he's so retarded. I will hav a torach on the tongs and he will go under the tounges and bit my hand. Or he will jump out of his enclosure when I open it and leap onto my shirt and start death rolling.
But when he knowns it's me petting him like I put my hand in and stroke him he's fine with it.
But he's just such a fucking pain in the ass.

so to own a reptile I have to not only spend 5-1000 dollars ordering or custom building an enclosure, I also have to have that enclosure fully set up and built ready to go for one specific species that I will then have to search morphmarket every day for months to years hoping one will show up so that I can pay another thousand for the animal plus shipping?
>>
>>5109321
>1000 for the enclosure and another 1000 for the animal
What the fuck are you looking for that would cost that much?
>>
>>5109321
>go to expo, buy terrarium, decor and animal for cheap
>>
>>5109328
everything that isn't a ballcrestleo is at least 300 dollars plus 50-150 shipping
and I dont even know if they charge tax, probably do.
Any enclosure bigger than a 20 gallon is the same, 300 at least for a 4 foot glass box, and thats if you order to take someone's trash away. Getting a new enclosure that's like 6 or 8 feet, in case you wanted to keep any snake, is going to cost at least 600, with equal or MORE on shipping, and then the tax, on BOTH of those figures.
And that's all before you've even bought a heat lamp.
>>
>>5109349
The 4x4x2 Dubia (very big, suitable for arboreal species) is on sale right now. You can set that up with a big powerful UVB lamp, a night heat lamp, a day heat lamp, timers, thermostat power, hydgrostat power, a mister, and all the fittings needed for ~$900 rn. A Lewisi Iguana is ~$400 with freight, which means in your ~$2000 budget, you've got ~$700 to build a kickass background and climbing structure, buy substrate, and get rolling on your supplies that will be ongoing expenses.
>>
>>5109321
have you tried just finding and befriending a lizard outside
>>
>>5109417
I have literally only ever seen a single wild reptile in 30 years, a garter snake when I was little
>>
>>5109349
>shipping
Why would you subject anything more than an insect to that? Just check with your local breeders. It's vastly more humane.
>>
>>5108969
it really do be like that
>see motion
>eat
simple as.
>>
>>5109451
YOUR LOCAL BREEDERS HE SAYS
>>
>>5109461
Yes, unironically. Vet your breeders, don't just buy from some rack hoarder. If you cannot source a specific triple-lux FOMO morph locally, why do you feel you absolutely need it? At least in the US, literally everywhere has at least someone willing to put in the time and effort to produce quality offspring. This is the case for dozens, if not hundreds of species of reptiles.
t. flyover resident
>>
>>5109461
if you're going to be a damn fool then gtfo. yes, buying from local breeders is often the best route for many animals (when you can find them at all on morphmarket etc depending on your area), and shipping can cause issues, but obviously local pickup isn't always feasible for everything. instead of knowing this you are bitching on 4chan. scoffing at common practices and crying about prices means you might just not be cut out for herps.

i'm sorry you got priced and effortmogged out of reptiles but it's simply not our fucking problem. exotics are not stray cats.
>>
>>5109349
>everything that isn't a ballcrestleo is at least 300 dollars plus 50-150 shipping
There are plenty of affordable small herps but they won't be your special snowflake pupper you can handle

I'm assuming you're a stupid fucking cocksucker moron because you still don't understand that the reason people say "go to a breeder" is because your options otherwise are garbage. "Me want scaly pet, how do I get for five dollars?!" YOU DON'T, you fucking dicksucker. I live in a snowy hell and managed to find my tropical gecko bred locally, if you can't get one locally or find a good source otherwise (versus bitching in this thread) and will just cry then, it's a sign you should fuck off and die for your insolence/it's clear from your attitude that you aren't the type to do good by these animals. spoiler: exotic vets cost hundreds and more also, so what's your plan for that idiot? just go away, you are not a good prospective lizard owner (or dude in general since you're fucking retarded).

now i know why nobody bothers to make these generals but me. get a clue or get the fuck out jesus christ.

Guys if I am doing the cork bark, expanding foam, etc background, should I wait for the silicone to cure or can I go at it with the foam right away?
>>
>>5109349
I can go to a home depot and get the materials to build a waterproof 8x4x4 terrarium RIGHT NOW for less than 500 dollars. and that's everything, up to and including the track for the sliding doors and silicone/fiberglass resin for waterproofing the panels. I could get the outer structure done and the resin on and curing tonight and still get a solid 8 hours of sleep. You're bitching to bitch.
>>
>>5109672
I'd let the silicone cure up first. foam and silicone both cure with moisture, so wet stuff doesnt really like to stick to silicone all that well, and ditto for foam.
>>

NEET here
Parents just went on vacation after deciding to rescue this turtle from a bag of crawfish, we put him in a tank with a bunch of soil from a nearby river, treated water, and a circulation fan from my saltwater tank.
He seems to be doing okay so far but isn't eating much, just a bit of the store dry food and eating the bugs/worms that came in the dirt. Looks like he got punched in the eye at some point.

I figured you guys would know as well as anyone, is the ReptiZoo PID heat lamp thermostat the cheapest good quality dimming thermostat for heat lamps? I’ve got one I use for baby chickens, but this year I’m increasing the number of Cornish Rocks I buy by quite a few, and so I’ll need to buy several more. I see cheaper ones, but are they reputable?
>>
>>5108608
I've seen it with multiple species of darts or tree frogs at several well funded and highly regarded aquariums in the US, but they're always very large - the smallest was maybe a 4x6x4' which just had two species. Mystic Aquarium (famous for its beluga whales) has a roughly 6' cube that has four or five different, similarly sized dart species, but I suspect they are placed in there as full sized adults.

sorry if this is a blogpost or whatever, i mostly just lurk /an/ and very rarely post
my corn snek kicked her bucket last january and ive been ruminating for a while but now feel like i wanna get back into the thing again
im a UK fella and not super well-versed by any means but i plan on visiting my local reptile shop next week and seeing whether or not they can order a bluetongue for me, been wanting to keep a lizard for a while but i didn't have room while my snek was alive, and i think the viv i had for her is too small for a skink so im probably gonna be looking into purchasing a whole new setup
i'm seeing a lot of conflicting info online about bluetongue care, mainly in terms of substrate and diet (some say high quality cat/dog food is fine, some say don't do that)
are there any idiotproof "care sheets" or whatever you guys would recommend to a potential new bluetongue owner?
>>
>>5109760
gotcha I'll wait for the silicone to cure
I hope I won't fuck up this expensive ass terrarium

I know springtails eating mould is an advertising pitch to sell people 10 dollar springtail cultures, but it's easy to see why people would think that
I made a setup for them, and as always happens before a microbiome is established, there was instant mould
I pull up the rib bone where a lot of it is concentrated, and a bunch of them had found their way over to it and had been hanging out under the mouldy bone, presumably for most of the night, probably eating the slime forming on its underside.
>>
>>5110548
I hatched free springtails from peat, maybe I should start selling them
>>
>>5110829
these things are literally worthless and you still have to pay absurd prices if you don't know someone willing to give you some for free
>>
>>5110507
Worst case you can just razorblade it off, which while tedious isnt especially difficult.
>>
>>5110866
They do clean up mold though, no? They got into my grindal worm culture that I have for my fish and they keep it completely mold free which is neat.

they compete with mold, they don't eat it. they eat what mold does, therefore reducing the spread of it.
They both break down small scraps of food, but springtails do it without destroying your sinuses.

I always used dirt from the backyard for substrate. The trends and concerns of current year have no power over me.

There are apparently one or two small clams in the sand about half an inch in size.
We added a few fish for the turtle to eat.

Any advice on a ball python not eating? It’s been 2.5 months. She did this in the past after eating a slightly bigger than normal rat however that only lasted 5 weeks. She’s not losing weight, still in the 1500s grams (my weigh set up is fucky and she’s a very sociable snake so she refuses to sit still in the tub so can’t get a consistent spot on weight). As mentioned, sociable and high energy. Husbandry is fine, even gave her an extra hide to see if that would help but nothing has changed. Idk what to do. I know people have had them go over a year no food, and if her weight is fine husbandry is good she’s otherwise perfectly healthy then I really don’t need to worry but it’s still concerning to me to see her not eat for so long. Like I get it, she’s a snake she’s a reptile they’ve evolved to be able to fast for fucked up periods of time and they can seemingly do it for no reason. But it’s concerning anyways. I know if I have the husbandry good, if she’s pooping and eating regularly then my job is done.
F/t’d rats are what I feed btw. Not gonna try a live as much as I’d like to just for her to eat, because if she still doesn’t eat it then I’m stuck with a rat and I’ll get attached to it lol.
I’m also sick of her not eating and having to throw rats away. I’m going to skip my next feed day, just bare minimum maintenance no handling nothing until 2 feed days from now.
I was looking to rehome her and now I can’t until she starts eating again.

I want to get mourning geckos but i have some concerns about them infesting my apartment or the whole building due to their ability to go through small gaps and reproduce quickly. How real of a threat is this? I live in a nordic country but i guess they could survive the winter by staying indoors and eating whatever bugs they find, that leafystreet video kinda scared me off. Also about population control i guess best is to just find the eggs and freeze them?

I know it can fuck you up when they're on an extended hunger strike, but so long as she's not actively losing weight and her body condition is still good you're fine. She'll eat when she wants to eat.
