God fucking dammit. I wanted to make a question, but there are no cat general. Fine, i'll create one edition

My cat will turn 5 years old this month. She never purred. The only time i listened to her purring, was when she fell from my building and disappeared for 3 days. When we found her, and brought her, she purred very loud for some days. She was 1 yar old then
But lately, in the past months, she purrs a lot when i pet her, give her food, or hold her like a baby. Why is this?
>>
>>5121111
Cats have personalities and internal thoughts. They can ponder and learn and grow like we do, and they can decide the change their mind about things. If she never purred its cause she never trusted you. If she does now it means she's warmed up to you. When she was gone for 3 days she probably developed a new appreciation for you.

I have a long hair cat. My gf usually brushes the mats of his belly with a metal brush and it's rough going. When she's not around I "brush" him with the back side of the tv remote. It's so smooth so it feels good and he thinks I'm the better brusher. Anyone have more cat hacks to share?

My friend and his gf are the types to take in foster cats and bring them to vet every other week because they like pissing money. Anyway, they adopted a wobbly cat that no one wanted and while he is adorable with a cute personality it is really sad to see. Sure you get some good laughs when he falls in the water bowl or tumbles down the stairs, but he's less than a year old and this is all he has to look forward too. Sometimes he falls while taking a shit and gets covered in it. By the time he's old he will be a miserable pile of arthritis and bruised bones. I genuinely believe killing him is the humane thing to do.

Some questions
Do male and female cats/kittens act differently? Like is one more aggressive/calm etc. They'd be neutered if that matters
I've only been around elderly cats and either were chill but I think that was just nature by being older. but I'm not sure about how younger cats/kittens would act

And at what age are kittens fine with being around steep stairs? I'm worried about them going through the railing similar to image related and falling down. The older cats were smart enough not to, but we still put up a barricade to stop them looking out in case. Wondering if you'd need that with kittens (even thought they could jump over that compare to elder cats)

We also used to have food/water/litter downstairs and upstairs so they didn't need to walk down/up every time if they didn't want to. I assume kittens would be ok with that in one location?

Just trying to learn what having a kitten is like compare to the older cats that I'm used to. I don't know what habits/environment I'd need to change for them

From my anecdotal experience, my female cats have tended to be less tolerant of strangers and more aloof around the house. My male cats were all lap cats who would live by my side or literally on my lap, and enjoyed the socialisation with house guests. YMMV.
As for the steep stairs, I rented a flat with some a few years back while one of my cats was a kitten and by the time we let her have free-roam of our place, she could go up and down the stairs without much issue.

Well, my family is about to put the old lady down on Monday. She’s gotten to the point where she can’t take more than a few steps before having to lay down from exhaustion, and she’s completely stopped eating now.
I’d like to think 18 years was a pretty good run. I’ll miss her.
>>
>>5123458
Good luck anon. Our lady had lung cancer, but she had an appetite so I could give her a cocktail of sedatives in her food hours before they gave her ketamine and the lethal shot. I'm glad her suffering is over, but I never forget the glassy eyed, dissociated look before euthanasia. It's haunting.

Ya my cat is about 6, never purrs and now will come by about twice a week randomly this year wanting a petting, claws me when done and darts off.
Cuddles my 3 year old pitty daily.
Cats do whatever they want to whenever they feel like it.
Had a mean manx that finally wanted cuddles and purred at age 22. Died soon thereafter.
Dad could pet touch and cuddle it since year one. If I tried it became a razor beast.
Waiting two decades made it feel special.

have you ever tried purring like a cat? it's not impossible for a human, and it's very calming actually, I can see why they do it all the time.

it's a lot harder on the exhale than the inhale though, but with some practice you can get continuous purring just like a cat.

I need advice /an/

my roommate has a young female cat, about 1-2 years old. it has clearly imprinted on her, and will sleep on her bed, her chair, or climb up onto her shoulders and sleep there when she's sitting in the chair.
i should mention that this cat has the most minor recurring issue of one of her tear ducts getting a little gunky (it's not an infection, it's probably structural or just a quirk), and the cat doesn't do a good job of cleaning it. my roomie often asks me to help out w/ it (idk why she doesn't do it herself, but she says i'm good at it, and i'm happy to help since i like cats and it clearly can't help it).

however, the cat cannot stand to be in the same room as me and usually tries to avoid me, despite the fact that i am usually the one to feed it, and very delicately mind you, clean its face with a lukewarm damp cloth. cleaning its face when it gets eye boogers has become more and more difficult over time, as the only time i can approach is when i put food in her dish, leave the room, then come back in.

the method i've been using is to approach the cat just after she's done eating, lightly but firmly get a hold of the scruff of her neck (this is how i was taught to immobilize a cat without hurting them, and from what ive read this is how you're supposed to do it), and then very lightly brush the cat's cheek and tearduct area with a lukewarm cloth until the gunk is cleared away. i then lighten my grip on the scruff of her neck, give her a few massaging pets there because it couldn't have been that comfortable, then let her go.

i cannot do this anymore though, as the cat flips out now and scratches me if i try and immobilize her to clean her face.

i should mention i own two male cats who are completely chill, and who have no issue being picked up, cleaned, or even pet on their bellies or paws. i should mention the problem cat doesn't interact with my cats unless she's trying to steal their food.

what do? how do i gain cat trust?
>>
>>5123898
I'd skip the raw mince beef imo unless you really trust the butcher. If it's grocery store mince then I'd stop doing it altogether. You don't know how good their quality control is, or how long it was ground before being packaged -- grinding meat exposes more of its surface area to bacteria. The risk of it negatively impacting your cat's health is slim, but not none. I'm probably being paranoid though, but I thought I'd play devil's advocat.

>>

>>
>>5124030
nta but that's the usual territory / turf dispute situation for kots. it's too soon to tell, but if there was hissing and growling going on the whole time, that's not too promising of a first impression. maybe time will tell and they'll become more amicable. there not being any physical violence is a good sign in that regard.

Any advice for a cat pissing indoors out of his box?
He's neutered
Has constant access to fresh litter that he'll use
I'm very certain he doesn't have a UTI as he's not showing any sign of distress, constantly cleaning his crotch or straining/meowing while peeing.

9 times out of 10 he uses his litter box just fine, but that 1/10 he'll piss either in front of the living room window or on my bed where we sleep together most nights. He's never peed there while we sleep.

He's indoor only and lives a very stress-free lifestyle, constantly access to his needs and I'm a quiet person so there's no loud noises, surprises/startling or anything

Only thing I can guess is a stray(?) cat occasionally drops by that he hates and he's marking territory. That's a hard thing to deal with though as I've contacted our local council and they offered cat traps but it's not a regular visitor and I mentally don't like the idea of them hauling off what could be someone's pet even if they're an irresponsible owner.

Depends on the cat. I have two and one is not fussed about blankets at all, but the other will not allow you to pet him unless he is wrapped in a blanket. Fuss his neck or chin? Nope. Fuss his neck or chin while he surrounded by a fur blanket? Yes. You can even wrap him up like a baby and carry him around and he absolutely loves it, and when he goes up to you for a catnap on your lap he will wait for you to put a blanket on your legs or otherwise he will stroll off to find a blanket himself to sleep in without you.

I may require an opinion, my cat is 6 years old, she has, for the past year, been shitting all over the house. She has a sister so initially I tried to get two different sandboxes but it has not worked in the slightest. I didn't notice anything really all that concerning but today she went into my lap and her butt was all filled with shit. She didn't clean herself so I dragged her to the bathroom to see and clean it, her fur has also become dirtier in the lower half specifically, I was wondering if this could be a real issue and if it's worth calling a vet over, she is impossible to handle when I bring her to a clinic.
>>
>>5124961
The recommended number of litter boxes is x+1 where x is the number of cats you have. Ideally you can keep at least one box in a different part of the house than the others. Some cats are just dump and need to have their butts wiped every month or two. They make pet wet wipes for that purpose so you don't have to give them a full bath and remove their protective oils. It's also worth keeping in mind some cats poop and vomit in random places as a stress sign.

My orange kitty stopped eating about a week ago.
Emergency vet and overnight stay and three hours of driving.
Nothing to be done.
Just making him comfortable until he goes or we put him down. He’s not suffering that I can tell just not eating and kidneys shutting down.

The cat my wife has had since she was a young child, that was a freshly weened kitten when my wife got her, is scheduled for being put to sleep in home this afternoon. The poor old cat is 26 years old currently, has advanced kidney disease, bladder cancer, eye cancer + glaucoma in the left eye and bad eyesight in the right eye, arthritis, thyroid issues, a heart murmur, has lost 1/3 of her body weight in the last 4 months, has high blood pressure causing the occasional seizure, hasn't been able to walk straight or jump well since her first seizure, hasn't been able to make it to the litterbox in time for a bit over a month now, and in the last week has developed a bad cough that gets worse if she doesn't take two or three breaks when moving from her chair to her food/water or litterbox. Despite all this she still has been eating her regular cat food, drinking water, and purring happily when given attention and affection, but it feels like the right thing to do to help ease her suffering before it gets to a point where it's overwhelming and where she loses that last bit of quality of life that she has been able to hold on to. We've of course been taking her to the vet, where they always remark on how old she is and how well she's done holding on this long, and have kept up with medications and treatments to try to help with all of her troubles and to keep her quality of life up.
I still feel bad since she's been such a good friend to my wife for 26 years, even if I know trying to force the poor old thing to hold on for our sakes would be terribly unfair to the cat. We decided on doing an in-home thing for putting her to sleep when the day finally came, since we figured that she would be happiest in the chair she claimed as soon as we bought it sitting on her blanket and the heat pad we got to help her arthritis pains, but now that the day has come for it I can't help but worry it that it might be harder this way. I just hope we've done right by her.

We've at least been able to give the poor old cat lots of treats and a good last weekend, even gave her a whole rotisserie chicken to eat at yesterday since even in her old age she would try to pull the trashcan down to get at any scraps of one whenever we'd have one as part of dinner, so hopefully the good memories will be the main part that sticks around after.

We buried our orange kitty yesterday. Put some flowers, a drawing the kid made, and a cat toy in with him.
Gut wrenching anon. I’m sorry for your loss.

The appointment went about as well as it could go, she didn't have any distress or discomfort during the process. It was still rough, but knowing it was as gentle as it was for her makes it easier. She was able to fall asleep on the pain and anxiety medicines they gave her so she got to go really gentle. My wife gave her one of those churu tubes as she was falling asleep on the pain meds, she had the willpower to stay awake long enough to get the last bit of the treat eaten which is a nice memory, my wife also got to stay with and keep petting her childhood cat until the end which was good. So I suppose if anyone else ends up needing to go thru the same sort of thing I would recommend doing an at home if you can handle it.

How many cats do you guys have? I have 2 young cats at the moment but recently I have been presented with the oppertunity to get a third kitten and I am worried that I am becoming a mad cat man or something. I have the selfmade excuse to myself that cats are low maintenance compared to something like having dogs or birds so having 3 is not that bad of something to manage, but is that just cope?

The cat managed to open the mosquito nets around the windows and ran away
He is a neutered male, around 4 years old, spent all his life indoors
All of the people I know say that he will return, but I'm on a very tight schedule and may not be able to get him in time
Anyone had any experience with a runaway cat? How long did it take to return?

I managed to locate him, he is in the next yard over, however the location is incredibly dilapidated and unkempt, I will have to break in with gardening equipment to look further into that yard
Cat wasn't interested in returning to me, but at least I know roughly where he is
For a dumb indoor cat, he quite nimbly managed to run away in that yard

Anyone do leash walks and day trips/hikes with their cats? Fairly sure it's just a social media phenomenon that filters the successes to the top but I'm trying to see if mine is built for it. Cat acts like how a cat should ie look for immediate hiding places

I did, but I agree for most cats it's just standing there while they hide under a bush.
It's a while before they are comfortable enough to explore and walk around, and even then it's more area sweeping than truly walking anywhere.
It also helped that I had a cat that liked being near me, so naturally wanted to follow if I started walking away.
>>
>>5127175
Cool, I'll probably give walk training another couple months to see if it sticks. Did you have to do some shoulder jump training in case of dogs/undesirable scenarios or you just pick em up and stick in a back pack? How's their prey drive? Mine definitely thirsts for blood

I didnt, but that sounds like a good idea if they are easy to train. I depended on retractable, locking leash and how well my cats handled being picked up and carried by me.

Very low. Neither were big on hunting, though Polo caught a mouse once.

Spend the next few days vacuuming best you can, and empty the canister in and outside bin, or replace the bag each time.
Use bonding time to groom/flea comb your pet cats if you have any.

>>
>>5127184
in addition to vacuuming your carpets, next time you see that kot, give her a bath if you can
i might suggest to apply some anti-flea medication to the back of her neck (that's the one place fleas like to congregate since cats physically can't groom there by themselves), BUT do keep in mind that if that cat is social with other cats that help groom them, and the other cat grooms the part your applied the flea medication to, that other cat will get dangerously ill from the flea poison.

Why are housecats so hydrophobic when big cats of all kinds love water? Is it purely cultural or is there a biological component? Because you do sometimes see regular cats who enjoy swimming
>>
>>5127283
I bet it has to do with thermal regulation. Easier to maintain a core temp when you are larger, even if the water soaks through your fur.
>>
>>5127286
nta but I also wonder if it has something to do with fur length -- i wonder specifically if there's any correlation

I never thought I'd see the day. I always figured that people had enough commonsense to "let nature happen" and not try to anthropomorphize animals with human rules and expectations. Like, as much as you might hate to see it, if you saw a bear pin down a deer and the deer was screaming for its life as the bear bites at the deer's neck, you'd have no right intervening. The bear needs to eat. The bear isn't being evil, it's just following its instincts.

Here is what's pissing me off today. This cat channel is showing a male cat trying to mate with what looks to be a 1 year old female cat and the guy is actually kicking the cat away and the commenters are calling the male cat a pedophile and threatening violence against the cat. The male cat isn't being evil, he's just following his instincts.

I've never witnessed people doing this before. Is this common behavior? If you have a pet cat or dog and it starts mounting a younger cat/dog, would you scold your pet for trying to mate with a younger animal? Would you beat your pet or have the pet neutered out of spite for "being a pedo"? I'm scared for the animals being abused because human expectations are being expected of them.

>I've never witnessed people doing this before. Is this common behavior?
I've never seen anyone in person go as far as these morons did, but the general discourse around animals is completely filled with those kinds of retarded arguments, both ways, its entirely self-justification of status quo/griefing. Cats should ask for consent before mating, but we aren't expected to respect a cat's agency over their own body in any shape or form whatsoever. Everything we do is always "for their own good, because they don't know better", but their own good somehow always ends up being whatever is easiest on us/fits the most with our own understanding of what is good.
A one-year old female cat has gone through at least 3 heat cycles, possibly more, and could be expected to have had at least one litter. Cat sexual intercourse isn't something graceful, and doesn't seem very fun for the female, but remaining in heat for another week has to be stressful as well.
Now I say this but the first time I walked into the house and saw by newest 4 months old kitten holding down my 3 years old cat and mounting her I did shout angrily(/proudly) at him to stop raping his sister.
>>
>>5127583
Yes anon. All pet cats should be neutered. Their species reproduces via painful rape and they reproduce almost as fast as rodents while doing it. Shelters are literally overflowing and bleeding heart childless women are maintaining uncontained feral cat colonies to try and fail to cope with severe cat overpopulation.

The felis sylvestris lybica cat evolved under constant selection pressure from giant eagles, numerous jackals and wolves, street dogs, and even bigger and meaner cats. As cute as they can be their reproductive instincts clearly don’t have a place outside of a hostile desert environment where most of them die before turning 1. If we just let them breed here they cause bird/lizard/frog/snake extinctions and help fuel coyote overpopulation just so some cate can “naturally” rape each other and shit out doomed souls a few months later. It is healthy and ideal for common people to be opposed to unneeded feline reproduction.
>>
>>5127587
Pets arent natural. The moment you have a pet, it stops being about what's natural for the species. If you want that, then dont have them as a pet.
One of the things we severely change between a natural animal and a pet is their access/ability to sex.
>>
>>5127592
Unnatural doesn't have to be hypocritical.
Contrary to you, I don't think society or human life stands in opposition to nature, only the way we do it. You can certainly choose to view the way you interact with your animals as ownership, I'd argue it's a nearly blasphemous waste of one of the greatest aspect that living offers us. The animals we typically view as pets are intelligent enough to build a relationship with us that goes well beyond the pure imposition of our will and their confinement to our dwellings.
>>
>>5127603
Counterpoint: a cat is less intelligent than an animal that only needs to live in a womans purse and sniff stuff occasionally, does great if neutered and kept inside, and is extremely destructive if loosed on the environment by an anthropomorphizing pseudo-philosopher who thinks enough passionate metaphysical babbling can override actual reality with whatever moral conclusions he comes to whilst on his soapbox.

You are dismissed.
>>
>>5127603
>Unnatural doesn't have to be hypocritical.
That was my point. It isnt hypocritical for a pet owner to make such decisions, and whether it is natural is not the metric.
The metric is whether it is harmful. And denying a male cat the ability to mount and fuck does not harm them. It might stop some harm to the female, but there can be cases made for females in heat needing more than enforced separation. but that's why you should spay and neuter your pets so they dont go into heat.
>only the way we do it
that...would be society.
>You can certainly choose to view the way you interact with your animals as ownership
That's called a pet, yes.
> a relationship with us
That's fine. you can have relationships with animals that are or are not pets.
> pure imposition of our will
Disagree. you can choose not to enact that control, but "pet" very much requires that imposition of will.
If you dont own it, it isnt a pet.
> their confinement to our dwellings.
confinement is a choice pet owners can make.

>can make

there is no true law but that which doesnt go away if you escape the police and renounce all beliefs
and that is what natural actually means. not the order we have chosen as un-human, pure and un-corrupted, as fools take from the myths of the book of bereshit and the stories of enkidu - but the order we can’t argue with, or even argue about, and can only discover or remain in ignorance of.

>>

>And denying a male cat the ability to mount and fuck does not harm them.
Destroying the reproductive capabilities of any living being is harm, it is the very definition of degeneration in ontology.
Living beings must reproduce, every living being since the primogenitor has lived according to that rule.
You can harm something in order to bring about a greater good. The `greater good` with pets is ease of management from our point-of-view, not their own personal well-being.
You pretending rape applies to cats means there is a moral value to their agency. If so, then by our moral standards unilaterally imposing our will on their body is also a violation of consent. I`m not arguing against your position (although it is retarded), I`m arguing against the lack of consistency in it.
Either you rape the cat, or the cat rapes another cat. For some reason you think you doing it to the one you`ve chosen to befriend is better.

We picked up a cat about a year ago. When I moved him to the apartment it was hard to teach him to go to the litter, but by the end of winter he managed to accostume. When the spring came, he started pissing everywhere BUT the litter. Not even marking with little puddles but straight up pissing. By now he also started to shit outside of litter, maybe because he's afraid of toilet room but he ignores the second litter in the living room. He either pisses ont eh periphery of the apartment with the "outside" (entrance door, windows, balcony) or in the corners. Vet said straight up that the only solution is castration. Is there anything I can do as an alternative to ball-chopping?
>>
>>5127873
Yes neutering is the best option. He won't miss his balls, he will be fine. Get an enzyme cleaner and thoroughly clean everywhere he pissed.

I recently got a new stray who is very sweet and sociable. My old cat doesn't want anything to do with him and she's naturally very skittish. She hides ontop of cabinets and growls/hisses when he's nearby. I've kept him in a separate room, I feed both of them by the closed door so she associates his scent with food / good thoughts. Its been a month, how much longer will this take so he can be out and about?
>>
Do you ever rub a cat's belly? I don't think it's worth the gamble. I'll meet an affectionate outside cat, cat will rub against me, happily receive a bunch of pets, and then roll onto its back with its body against my foot practically begging to get a belly rub, but I never take the bait because cats get real frisky in this position. I have plenty of experience where my own cats would latch onto my hand, bite, and rabbit kick me when I try touching their tummy.
