Holy shit how did they get the squirrel to pose exactly like the funny woe jack meme???

A young squirrel has shown up at my house yesterday.
Chestnut brown fur, tail not as bushy as that of an adult but already fluffy, maybe 3cm thick.
It spent a couple hours "hiding" latched onto a wall, then sat down on the ground for a bit looking tired.
Tried making it a food offering on a plate but it bolted around the house until finding an open door and hiding among the shoes. Left it food and water there, opened the cat flap so that it would be able to leave. Checked up in the evening and it was curled up sleeping.
In the morning the food was untouched but the squirrel was gone. Found it on the patio on the opposite side of the house looking energetic. Trapped it and released into the neighbour's yard, separated by a fence. The yard is abandoned and has apples and cherry trees growing there.
30 min later the squirrel came back.

Can't really leave it as is, cats will eat it.
Also the fact it's not touching food is concerning.
What do?

Idk where the nest is, haven't seen any other squirrels around.
Could trap it and take it to the forest but would it survive?
The weather is taking turn for the worse, going to be a cold rainy week.
Could make it a box to live in for a bit until it figures out where to go next but the cats would eventually catch it.
Could catch&release it across the fence again but this time keep making noise so that it goes the other way but what if the mother's nest is inside the house? There's like 3 families of birds nesting here already and god knows what else.
Could put it in a cage until it matures but it would probably miss the crucial step of learning how to survive on its own and will die when released or something.

Also this.

You either let nature take its course and accept that it might die, or you interfere and accept that it might become dependent on you. Try to find some squirrel rehab literature.

I guess it should make its own life decisions, then. Looks independent or almost independent enough.
It's been circling the house and climbing up the walls, acting perky enough so it's not dying from starvation at least. Also seen it hopping across the lawn a couple of times.
Made it a couple of nests in places it frequented but it's probably best to chase it off really, so that it lives beyond the fence. Fewer chances of getting eaten there.
