Just rescued a magpie stuck and tangled on a long dry tree branch for a couple of days, with a thread knotted his foot to branch, he absolutely panicked to my throw hook attempts from 5th floor window and broke his left ankle open in the process. finally broke the dead branch and collected the fella immediately.the bone is out and foot is limping down barely held by the other half of ankle flesh. no use for the foot at this point guess. Its night and saturday so no photos until morning, no vets available either. got him in a cat box on a soft pad, with water and bits of tomato, cheese and sausage. dont know what these things eat.he's past flyling age, young.no blood but the area was fluidic a little, indicating the fresh break. resting in dark and comfy room with air and room level temp.recently checked and he's awake, acting normal, but afraid of course, dropped a couple poop on the sheet. I left.any experts? I didnt want to gauze his ankle due his trauma already, or force stabilize it because the bone was sticking out beyond level where it ruptured.wat do? wat to feed? chances of survival? no bleeding on the floor to my knowledge as last I checked half an hour ago.photos in the morning I guess, dont want to disturb againand theres no light. So reference slop sketch here but pretty close tho.
magpies feed on pretty much everything, so that's really not a problem.
>>5132526good to hear that anon. I plan on adding hard egg and seeds in the morning. you think he can make it for another day until vet visit on monday?should I attempt any treatment to is foot?I dont know birb anatomy.
>>5132507>>5132528Take it to a vet. You’re not equipped to fix an injury like that
>>5132537can't do it until tomorrow.
>>5132634good stuff saving the little guy anon, i used to feed a few that had injuries like that, so it shows they *can* survive untreated in the wild- so I would imagine it can hold on for another night, keep it away from stress as best as possible. please let us know post-vet visit how it all goes. cheers anon
>>5132634Don’t try to treat it in the meantime. It’s very easy to fuck it up and accidentally make it worse
>>5132507It's probably morning by now. Is he ok or did he explode?
>>5132654>>5132662Nah just meant small things like alcohol or gauze, etc.now he's on his own in the box, gave him hard boiled egg, some sunflower seed cores, tiny piece of cheese, etc. seems to have eaten them within a few hours.Looks content. Bone end seems dried out. Not gonna touch him until tomorrow early.
>>5132747he ok
Alright, we went to vet, they didn't accept him.Suggested we call state nature protection, they'd come and pick up.Well, called them, they said no rides available over here.Fucks sake.
>>5132757>>5132959this doesnt seem something a vet couldnt fix, what an evil faggot (like all vets). what a sad situation, maybe he will still get better enough by himself, as long he doesnt lose his leg it shouldnt be impossible for a bird to live with a crippled leg.
>>5132983Yes, about 90-95% are evil merchants unfortunately.Another vet suggested amputation, but without full or local anesthesia. It would be painful. On the other hand, releasing him like this would work, but with a huge risk of tangling his limp foot again sometime in the future.
>>5132987releasing him like this would be irresponsible, what a conundrum, is it possible to take him to a wildlife rescue centre or something of the sort if they arent gonna come pick him up?
>>5132987better a crippled foot than an amputation. can birds even survive with one leg? it seems a bad solution to me.
>>5132990Will look for ways. Unfortunately my ride is also broken at the moment.>>5132992I think so, because also there's a huge portion of it still intact, not just the skin or a small percentage. I will offer the vet to just wrap it up with the best of their abilities, but then it may squeeze his leg in time while he's growing up. Maybe with an elasticite wrap. I don't know.
>>5132994>just wrap it up with the best of their abilities, but then it may squeeze his leg in time while he's growing up. Maybe with an elasticite wrap.this sounds like the better thing to do to me. maybe he will have to deal with a weak leg for the rest of his life but we're talking of a bird, it's not like a wing or something he cant deal with. and if you can feed him for like a month he would recover for sure.
>>5132994Post it on some local facebook groups you should be able to find someone who’ll do it for you
Alright we agreed with local vet. three of us, I held the boy, they held the leg straight and wraped it up with this soft, non chemical/adhesive and elastic gauze, it holds his leg straight just like tourniquet, will not do chemical burns, will expand as he grows up, and expected to hold about three weeks.win win for me and better than nothing or amputation. No operation pain. Also if it's to fall it will fall in time by itself. He can also finally sit down as I observed. Now the kid is so tired, emotionally broken of course, handled by giant monsters all day around, resting in the box. I fixed him a fresh water, good meal consisting hard cheese, tiny bits of tomato and light banana pepper if helps with hydration, all in stripes, and nice half baked ground beef.Immediately began eating when I was leaving the room so I am glad he's not given up or broken in spirit lol.My plan is to keep him in the box for another day, and open it's cage within room for another few days, then finally open up the window if everything's alright.
>>5133036great job, but please take care for him for at least a week or two so he can rest, feed and recover without troubles.
>>5133046yes. he at least needs to cool down and set his mind up from being handled. Family is gone away, two senors and a siblong, and this guy. He grew up here in a trunk I believe. The thing is that I have 8 cats. Gotta have him confined strictly to the room. Good thing is it's 6th floor building in a green neighborhood.
>>5133036>>5133046>>5133050Oh yeah don't let him out too soon. He doesn't know what's best for him so he may fly before he's ready and get into another accident.
