It is "critically endangered", which isn't surprising in and of itself, but why? These were only made aware to humanity in MY lifetime (1993, to be precise) in the mountains around Laos and Vietnam, meaning if we had been razing its land through construction or deforestation surely signs that we were killing a species should have been noticeable before then. But instead they were just...totally unknown until the 90s.

To me it seems like they're endangered because they aren't repopulating, either due to geographic constraints or simple lack of mates. Sounds like they're endangered simply because they are as a fact of the matter. I'm not sure what conservation efforts you could use to maintain an animal that just isn't proliferating.

That region was a warzone for decades and was indiscriminately bombed by the US, which could've depleted the animal's habitat and numbers

I suppose that's true. The Ho Chi Minh Trail ran through that border region and even now it's quite polluted with unexploded ordinance.

Ordinance also uses highly toxic chemicals that poison the area. Even traditional explosives not intended to be poisonous are extremely toxic.

To the point of being vulgar.
