What's their edge over other species in urban environments?
free corn
rat but free because wings
>>5135742Having no fear of humans from being descendants of domesticated pigeonsHumans not wanting to eat themHumans leaving food behind they don't mind eatingHumans intentionally feeding them
>>5135766Oh, and I forgot to add:Urban concrete buildings mimicking their natural nesting sites (cliffs).
they just dont give a fuck
>>5135742Humans not wanting you dead on sight is an amazing trait to have in a urban environment
>>5135742They got there first thanks to us breeding them
>>5135742They're gregarious, which allows them to have large, resilient populations, mostly vegetarian, which gives them a wide selection of urban foods to select from and naturally inhabit cliff faces, which buildings are a great analog for.
>>5135767>>5135799didn't know about the cliff thing, that's pretty neat
>>5135742generally just being able to fly and fuck off is a good trait to get along with humans, same with corvids or water fowl
>>5135828The correct name for pigeons is actually rock doves.
>>5135742They don't give a fuck. Other birds see a human and then shit themselves.Pigeons shit themselves, and then see a human.
>>5135942the "bad at building nests" thing is dumb, they propably just need enough twigs so the egg doesn't roll away
>>5135942This. Pigeons give 0 fucks. Technically they are domesticated doves we abandoned who learned to adapt rapidly.>>5135742On top of no fucks given, adapting to live off humans still despite humans abandoning them after domestication cause they realized humans scare off their predators, they also carry less diseases than other birds and have incredible vision and pattern recognition.
>>5135767This is the key.In cities without large buildings you wont find them.
>>5135742wifebeaters
>>5136197Not really. You could argue that Rock Doves don't really need to build sufficient nests because they're used to nesting in cliff crevices, but other doves do this shit too like Mourning Doves, who have no excuse. Doves really do suck at building nests for some reason.
>>5136363That's not even true. Villages have plenty of pigeons too. They'll nest pretty much anywhere including in tree hollows if they can.
