They don't actually reproduce fast, they raise one or 2 chicks a year.In Hungary some people raise them for meat and make soup out if them.
Feral pigeons are full of chemicals, heavy metals, toxins and whatever random shit they eat off the ground. Also more trouble than it's worth killing them in public and then justifying it to police that it was for purposes of consumption.Some breeds of pigeon are raised for consumption, but under more controlled environments.

People also kept them for racing, show, companionship, and for communication. Almost all antique classic red barns have a pidgeon loft in the rafters, and the fact that they don’t require a ground pasture meant they could be farmed in the city too. But in the problem with keeping an animal to turn grain waste into food is that if your chicken operation is dishygenic enough to generate the grain waste you need for pidgeons, it’s also going to attract rodents. And as it became standard practice to poison rodents, people started occasionally getting poisoned by squabs who had been being fed poisoned grain regurg (pidgeon milk) by their parents, who had been eating baits put out for rodents. And since they were free flying, you couldn’t guarantee the safety of the squabs on your farm just because you weren’t putting arsenic or strychnine laced oats out for rats or mice.This caused pidgeon to fall out of favor with diners which lead to farmers putting screen on their pidgeon lofts to exclude the birds. This created the pest pidgeon we know today. If you aren’t poisoning rats and none of your neighbors are either, they make perfectly good livestock still, but the free flying nature of them means that you have to worry about them getting crap from somewhere you don’t control, so I wouldn’t recommend getting into raising squab for food unless you’re keeping an aviary and not just a loft. They are still fun pets, especially racing or spinner breeds.

>>5138043Because city pigeons are rats with wings. But plenty of other pigeons are just fine to eat. In texas people love to go hunting white-tail. You don't get much meat out of it, usually just a little medallion of breast meat, but its not bad for game bird.
