Knotweed is a pioneer plant specifically evolved to turn volcanic rock into soil for other plants. That's why it's so good at growing in asphalt
It's a great source of pollen and nectar for insects
It produces tons of biomass every year that decays into perfect black compost
Deer graze on it which allows other plants like goldenrod and asters to grow within knotweed patches
It's edible and helps treat symptoms of lyme disease (which is conveniently hidden by google autofill, curious)

And now the USDA is releasing the knotweed psyllid which should help integrate it into the ecosystem even more
