Why do dogs act like you've come back from war every time you're absent for 15+ minutes?

They don’t? are you keeping them cooped up all day? dogs need two walks, a few hours in the yard, and playing/training time most days. a german shepherd has as many brain cells in its cerebral cortex as a macaque. they need shit to do.

They don't do great with object permanence, and its a dog's #1 job to act happy when its owner comes through the door.
Also you probably train the dog to do it. I know with my cat when I get home from work the first thing I usually do is give the cat food, so he associates me walking in the door with getting fed.

I don't care why they do it but I feel the same whenever I see them so it's all good

Nice one Aristotle.

1: they do. they do great at it. i play the cup game with my dog.
2: wrong. it’s to bark at black people.
3: unlikely.
What usually happens is the dog thinks they’re finally, maybe, going to get to do something after 8-10 hours of being a highly intelligent social animal shut in a box, living in fear of doing something because they’ll get screamed at if they chew on something or knock a vase over. They are expecting you to please, finally, give them something to do.

If a dog lives a fulfilling life they amble over to the door to say hi and calmly go woo woo sniffy sniffy, go drink some water, and then go back to taking a nap because they know they’re getting a walk in 30 minutes, and that’s when they go ballistic. Happy dogs save the dramatic greetings for people they haven’t seen in days.

Maybe your dog just doesn't like you much.

somebody told me it's because they think you're out hunting and getting them food whenever you leave so they're excited at the prospect you may have food. But that's probably not true
