Rabbit and fancy rat keeping was a gentlemans trade along with the breeding of small dogs for smaller game. Rationally makes sense for a sterotypical man too: less space taken up and a cheaper mouth to feed. The inverse can even make sense for women who desire protection or security by having larger dogs (something weirdly common among traditional mastiff breeders up until the 21st century)
