This thread is dedicated to all animals of the Reptilia and Amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

To squeeze into rock crevices. Their shell is also flexible.

>a few years back I notice some weird discoloration on one of my valley garter snake's tail
>pic related, first instinct is to say snake fungal disease but her sisters are fine and I'm hypervigilant about that shit
>several thousands of dollars and multiple exotic vets vists show she's got a really godawful mycobaterical infection
>clear the infection but the skin issue is continuing to get worse
>slowly dies over a period of eight months
>final necropsy shows the skin changes were full thickness and she had some kind of opportunistic infection that took her out after being on antibiotics for months
>bummed but figure it was the infection that just wrecked her skin irrecoverably and it was inevitable
>start seeing it elsewhere in facebook groups
>their vets are coming up with wholly different diagnoses
>some kind of keratin issue
>fungal infection
>bacterial infection
>no idea
>all of them progress the same way - no treatments work, total dysecdysis, all of them eventually die of some opportunistic infection
>seeing it in a lot of red sided garters but it's been reported in several other localities as well, no common factor
It's some kind of fucking genetic defect. My first thought was breeding depression because it was so common among infernalis but it's all over the place, and apparently someone had a wild caught that ended up with it as well, and we probably dont see it because they get picked off before it progresses too far in the wild.
kind of comforting that there was just nothing I could have fucking done for my poor snake and she was just doomed from birth, but at the same time it sucks that there was fucking nothing I could have fucking done for my poor snake and she was just doomed from birth
End vlog, RIP Large.

I want tortoises, but have no friends or heirs to pass them onto when I die.

for anons who are curious, i taste tested a bunch of common gecko feeder insects (dubias, hornworms, superworms, banded crickets, etc.) and they literally all just taste like watery dirt regardless of gut loading. no wonder thirdie street vendors douse them in spices there is basically zero taste otherwise. the only crazy one was superworms, idk if it was just mine but they had a weird "refreshing chemical" taste like a mix of laundry detergent and cucumbers.

Reptiles are possibly sensitive to different flavors than humans so it's possible they taste better for them. Not for my gecko tho he prefers mangoes.

sure i just did it out of curiosity even though different receptors etc. also i tried some pinkie mouse and it's just a big blood ball like you'd expect in other predictable news

damn, you really did your research

consider that you are not only not a pure insectivore, but also that your tastebuds are completely SMASHED AND SLAMMED by lifetimes upon lifetimes of flavors beyond the ken of other animals, making any wild food taste like watery nothing to you regardless

Do you think if I threw the pet store delivery person a 20 they'd help me bring the tank into my house onto my desk
>>
There's some strange convergent evolution going on where nearly every single reptile on the planet is solitary but once lizards start getting small enough they become gregarious

the number one sales technique for scammers is to convince you you're sick so they can sell you the cure. You have to accept "politicians are going to take your herps away" before they can sell you "give us money and we'll work to prevent them from doing that," when the reality is that most politicans dont give a flying fuck about reptiles unless you're in the evolutionary thunderdome that is the deep south.
