Cholla should be fine, I can't imagine it would leak anything into the water. Test strips aren't worth much besides a general overview, and I would absolutely recommend testing more often, especially, near the end of a cycle. Biofilm indicates the presence of nitrate in the water, which means you're getting near the end. There are a thousand different opinions on this, but I like to monitor my parameters daily in order to make sure I'm adding the right amount of ammonia.

Ghost feeding is an old method, but its imprecise. I use bottled ammonia so I can know exactly how much nitrogen I'm putting in the water. All of my aquariums have had bacterial blooms while cycling, so I don't think you've crashed your cycle or anything like that. If anything, you're almost finished. The bacteria quickly consume all the nutrients they can and then die.

You're feeding way too much, you should be doing like a quarter as much as you described. One eyeball sized amount of food every day or two is more than enough. And domestic bettas can't go into pure distilled water. You probably shocked her a bit by dropping ph quickly, which weakens immune systems. The stress of changing from store tank also did this, and they compound a bit.

Add some pest snails and additional filtration, remineralize distilled water to close to current pH before you use it to water change (or balance your system and just do top offs but that's harder in 2.5g).

Sometimes you get a fish already sick, so that's possible too, but I'd put money it's that you're ridiculously overfeeding.

Live daphnia are good but are not nutritionally complete for a betta. Just get a couple high quality pellets and rotate.

It's probably fine if it's stuffed with plants, but they filter a lot worse than you'd think (other than fast growing floaters). More filtration will lower bacterial load in the water by providing living space for heterophagic bacteria which consume the free floating plant matter. Snails and shrimp help with this too. Every planted tank should have trumpet snails and ramshorns (or bladder snails, but fish tend to always eat their eggs IME), to get plant matter into a better form and then to sift it into the substrate.

Good luck with the egg bound problem though, that's a bitch.

Most bettas are tank bred, they have never lived in the wild. When it comes to pH and hardness, consistency is MUCH more important than hitting a specific number. Since you're dealing with a small volume of water, you could get distilled/RODI water and remineralize it, but I'm not sure its worth your time. I keep Discus; everywhere you go, it says to keep them in soft, acidic water. My water is hard and alkaline, but my Discus regularly spawn in it regardless. Like your Betta, my Discus were born in an aquarium. Unless your water is absurdly hard, it should be fine.

I've never successfully saved a pineconing fish, but that's pretty mild. If you can measure out the dosage for the small amount of water, go for it. Hit with a mix of antibiotics, antifungal, etc, anything may help. But I wouldn't have high hopes.

If the fish is still alive, one thing you can do is put it in a hospital tank and then really crank the heat up for a short period of time. Maybe 82-84. This will kill parasites as well as boost the animal's immune system/digestion. Use epsom salts as well, they work wonders on a bloated fish.

Poor little guys. I don't think they felt any pain, just got sleepy and never woke up. Hearing that story makes me want to go buy one of those backup batteries just in case. I lost a discus a few weeks ago, that hurt a lot. He was a runt and somewhat stunted, very shy and timid fish. Worst of all he had a marking below his eye that made it look like he was constantly about to cry. I was really rooting for this little guy but I don't think it was meant to be. He stopped eating and nothing I did helped. I threw everything at him but he still died and I felt like I failed my poor little friend.

The bigger the fish, the easier it is to get attached to. I think it's just natural. Small fish have personalities too but they become less distinct when you have a dozen virtually identical fish swimming around. If you truly don't want to get too involved, maybe a swarm of nano fish is for you.

Had to harvest some of my greenwater even though my daphnia didn't explode in numbers yet, because I went past the saturation point and the water was foaming again.
On the bright side, the daphnia tank how has a secondary population of seed shrimp that I use to feed my pygmy sunfish that they'll eat all the same.

I've been doing it two ways.

The ladleing method is the easiest to maintain but it goes through a shit load of water. I dump a liter of water a day in my yard.

The jars aren't wasteful with water but it's a lot harder to get consistent amounts. A lot more boom/bust.

My other takeaway is redundancy. Always have a couple reserve cultures of bith daphnia and greenwater on hand. I have a couple quart jars that I keep a small pop in. Every couple of weeks I empty half of it and refill it.

It's worth it though. Everyone in the tank, even my fat fancy goldfish, go nuts for them.

Any thoughts on (very course) filter media in a sump return section? I have a pump that has been running about 6mo without issue, has auto shut-off, etc, but there's been a little bit of infiltration of k3 media from the static 2nd chamber (1st is a big moving bed) into the return. I haven't seen any issues, and the return usually runs at only 1/5th power to maintain level, so I was wondering if I could put more of the stuff into the return chamber and "expand" the static section.

For reference, k3 is a honeycomb like plastic media that's roughly 25mm x 10mm x 2mm in size with large pores, and I wouldn't be putting anything like sponge or foam pads into the return section that might actually be able to fully clog or sneak into the sump's "cage" that's over the intake.

You’re right, I don’t. I couldn’t find any instructions on how to plant them, so I buried them as much as I could in the substrate with some root tabs. Didn’t inject CO2. There was nothing else in the tank except these two other plants, and I essentially left it for two weeks. The Vallisneria also hasn’t grown nor has it died, while the Nana petite has grown quite a bit though it isn’t as green.

Purple doesn’t truly exist in the hobby in a stable format. You can google it and find plenty of photos of purple-ish shrimp or maybe even the one off pure purple here and there. But it doesn’t breed true, hasn’t been stabilized. It’s something I work on a bit here and there, because the first person to do it will be revered in the shrimp hobby. I've kept saltwater before, and it is. If you have a 100 gallon aquarium, you're going to want a 20% WC per week. That's 20 gallons of saltwater you need to mix at least 24 hours beforehand, with a heater and powerhead. As you know, it's basically impossible to have only one aquarium. The amount of water storage you need will be constantly going up until you have 55 gallon drums all over your house. Where is an aesthetically pleasing place to put them? This becomes especially difficult in an apartment. I have quite a few freshwater aquariums, some on the larger side. But they're all close to a sink, so my Python system makes maintenance effortless. If you want to have success with saltwater you need to think about these things. If you go into it half-cocked you're going to throwing a lot of money down the drain instead.

I'm going to get a koi betta. I've never kept one before but it should be fun, and they're gorgeous creatures. I've got the sponge filter in an established aquarium; hopefully in a month it will be nice and cycled. I'm also pleased with these two pieces of wood; if I put a rock or a plant in between them, I can probably make them look like a root or a piece of bark.

Need some bristlenose-friendly plant reccs. Grabbed a bunch of different sized terra cotta planters, not gonna plant anything in the actual substrate just in those. Definitely wanna do dwarf hairgrass on the bigger planter I got, it’s a long tank so I’m thinking it’ll be close enough to the surface that they won’t mess with it and that’ll also get it a good amount of light. Try to find some Parotocinclus plecos instead, they max out at 2" and if you can get them breeding, you can sell juveniles for $25/ea or so to a LFS (vs. max $5/ea for bnp)

I hope my cherry barbs aren't stressing out my new shrimp too much. They don't nip or specifically nip at them but they are very nosey and active. They blow by the poor little guys with no regard and poke around all the hideouts.

Yes but the maintenance and filtration requirements will be a pain in the ass, and the goldfish will stunt, which doesn't cause cortisol release or other stress reactions and has been the case for all super-long-lived goldfish, but is worth noting.

I wouldn't recommend it below a 40 gallon, and even that's going to just be the goldfish and some cleaner snails if you can get the latter's population stable. They're really quite large fish, but also likely the hardiest aquatic animal this side of mummichogs, so will survive a lot.

I built two of these tanks for a palladium project, then happened to come into possession of a goldfish through someone else's actions. they also gave me some cherry shrimp, but I'm anticipating them to not last that long with the goldfish in the tank.

But there is, what I assume is, a bacterial bloom on the surface of the tank water. It looks like an oil slick.

Does that mean I can't add livestock?
How do I get rid of it?

This is more likely protein scum, or maybe biofilm. It's harmless by itself, but indicates the surface of the water isn't being agitated enough. If you get an airstone or surface skimmer, it will completely solve the problem. You're good to get livestock, but be aware that if it gets thick enough, it can prevent oxygen from dissolving into the water.

I was very close to breeding some furcatus and decided against it for similar reasons. I tend to avoid anything that eats its own babies or you end up stuck with grow out tanks full of cheap fish you’re gonna have a hard time selling, half of which need to be culled anyways.

My medaka haven't bred and it's pissing me off so I've devoted the tank to my dwarf cichlids pair . Medakas are in the whiskey barrel outside and no doubt will be breeding once they're completely out of my mind. Hoping my cories breed soon but I'm certain they'll blue ball me as well

Found my first molt on the floating guppy grass near the surface. That is a molt right? Some of the shrimp are still holing up under hardscape, hopefully just recovering from molting after the transfer to a new home. I haven't noticed any dead ones but only a few seem bold enough to hang out in the open with the cherry barbs swooping around.

They'll be less brave in general with cherry barbs (or any other fish). The cherrys have decent odds of eating one now and again, but even for stuff that never bothers them, having fish in the same container will make the shrimp shyer.

How would you acclimate a fish that’s been overnighted? It’s an adult pleco. On one hand, I tend to drip acclimate any adult fish especially if it’s from another state (completely different water to what it’s been in its entire life). On the other hand if there’s a lot of ammonium in the bag then drip acclimating is gonna do more harm than good. I won’t know if the seller did the diligence of fasting prior to shipping until it arrives. Also plecos are just hardy as fuck so I might be overthinking it. I’m pretty sure the bag is gonna come loaded with fish shit though. I just don’t wanna shock the fish to death going from the tank it’s probably spent its whole life in to a box to an airplane to a totally different tank with totally different water.

Prime is supposed to temporarily detoxify ammonia; if you treat the fish's water and then drip acclimate as normal it should be fine. I don't think a pleco is going to mind either way, but that's how I'd do it.

The bacteria lives on surfaces, not in the water. So there's nothing that will convert the "ammonium" (lol) into nitrites if you do drip acclimation.

But you're right that there is negligible nitrogen fixing bacteria free floating in water. And the claims that Prime does anything to ammonia are entirely unsupported.

This is all entirely academic - an adult pleco is going to be fine in basically any sort of transfer process. They're very tough fish, and as long as you don't freeze them (for long), they'll keep on living their happy armored lives. The bigger the species, the hardier they are, to boot.

Follow up question: how do I make sure my bottom feeding corys actually get the shrimp? I shot some from a turkey baster at the substrate but they quickly just started floating/swimming around, particularly towards the surface for the light.

I have a ram cichlid who seems normal and healthy during the day but when I check on him at night he sleeps lying on the ground completely on his side, should I be worried? I don't think he used to do this, I've had him for about 8 months now

Day 2 with the plecos. These guys are so fucking awesome. The male seems entirely preoccupied with the tunnels, spending an hour in one before briefly coming out and moving to another. The female has been much more exploratory and seems to be more interested in food. The male may have eaten during the night I’m not sure but the tunnels seem to be of more interest anyways. Sometimes the female will come up to the tunnels and he’ll shoo her away. I assume he’s just staking his claim and not particularly hungry yet. Kinda funny though, feels like I bought a pet butt cause so far that’s pretty much all I’ve seen is his ass sticking out from the tunnels. Gonna go get them some more plants today.

Bristlenoses are on the smaller side for plecos, maxing out at 4-6 inches depending on sex and finnage. I have these two in a double filtered 20 long with no other tankmates right now for breeding purposes. Might move them into something larger between spawns but there’s plenty of pleco breeders that keep pairs around this size in 20 gallons so I think it’s fine. I breed for profit so frequent water changes are part of the deal anyways.

I just don’t get it man. It’s my most planted tank. I don’t overfeed at all. I’ve added nerites and ramshorns to no avail. I added amanos and he murdered them. I’ve done everything you can imagine with light and nutrients. I just don’t fucking get it dude.

It only seems to happen when you take them in portrait configuration; landscape is fine. But it's even worse than that: I'm not even a phoneposter, I sent the picture to my PC and rotated it 90 degrees clockwise to try and counteract the counterclockwise rotation.
