I have money to pay out of pocket but if I get a 5k-10k bill I don’t even has to hesitate and consider how much liquid I have and how much I need to sell from investments. Thankfully however my family had insurance that covered exotic birds... until the insurance company said they weren't going to cover the costs despite the vet himself being with them and having them cover egg bound procedures before. Family had to front the 2k as the insurance company argued it wasn't an emergency and that non-invasive methods were used (the bird was in critical condition and had to have heavy hormonal medication to force a passthrough, with immediate surgery on standby to remove the egg if the medication failed to allow it to pass).It's a waste of money, save money instead for future vet bills.With that being all said though I think people should only own a pet if they are already living comfortably enough to throw money at them for things like vet bills. If you're in a situation where a vet bill is the difference between cutting down on your meals or bills to prevent your puppy or kitty dying you shouldn't put yourself or animal like that in a position such as that to begin with. 70% of my food bill is just on high quality feed for my own animals and they have annual bloodworks done by the vets so I know exactly how their health is progressing.

i have a cat that needed procedures in the high thousands, 5 digits, and leaved me with no savings left.it really shows me how i was confident with my savings for him but l still got raped by a vet bill

I've been fucked by vet bills so badly I've been unable to leave my mother's basement and had to switch careers to hopefully earn a living. People really don't like paying them, but they still feel entitled to services.

Just before getting my dog fixed the vet asked if he wanted the teeth cleaned too, added an extra 400 dollars to the bill.My dad thought it was going to be free lol.
