kind of a messed up question but i was just curious. do you guys think cats understand the concept of fairness?if you had two cats, and ONLY gave treats to one while the other one watched, do you think they would get jealous? if you did this for a long long time, do you think the cat would hate the other? would they hate you?

Cats may not be "fair" individually, but the tom of my local colony always rounds up his troops when I go to feed him, and waits until I've fed all of them first before eating. He's been doing it consistently for a few years now, so my guess is that it depends on their position in a social group, or perhaps a successful colony depends on a smart tom like that, I don't know.

I've been doing yard shit for the last month, for context.She started by lying down a respectable distance from the door and waiting for me to come in. Then she started getting more and more vocal when I'd come in. Now she found a spot in the window to sit and stare at me. When I get close to say hi while she's in her window and I'm outside, she shows expressions of anger/frustration/agitation. Her eyes dilate, she pulls her ears back a little. My cat gets jealous of the other one all the fucking time. She has a clear "I'm annoyed" right now meow she does when I call the other cats name for feeding. But I don't think any one of them understands fairness. They just want everything for themselves. The only thing they respect is each other's sleeping places.
Behavioral economist here (postdoc). Even if cats did, what makes you they would care? "Fairness" as an empirical concept can be tested, and you can see a variety of outcomes for different species.
