please do not get your kids one of the more "conscious" pets like a cat or a dog.
The damage they'll get from losing it will be much greater than the benefit.
If your kids and pet grow up together as well, the pet is deemed to die or get health complications during your child's most critical years (high-school, moving out for college, relationships etc)

9 months ago i was chosen by the cat delivery system, a cute tuxedo kitty ran to my feet as i was walking.
In an hour, it will be the 8th day he's been missing. He just went out one day and never came back. Hes almost a year old.
I've been searching since then, I even wanted to get a drone operator to scan the neighborhood with thermals but my dad said "im not paying for a drone for a fucking cat" and "don't fucking dare spend money with your debit on this"
I've been crying a lot alone but even that's not enough, I want to explode. I'm barely holding it in front of people.
On one of these searches, the day after garbage day I rode past a neighbors driveway that smelled so much like roadkill that I had to stop. I got confused because it smelled so much but there was no visible body anywhere, I even thought the wind was carrying the smell from the fence across the street but no, it was actually a particular spot on the pavement that looked clean but REEKED like roadkill. I thought, if they ran over my cat I'd like to know so I can have closure but they weren't opening the door so I just left a poster under their mat and left.
So yeah, this is killing me right now. I don't think the brain can actually separate them from human babies, maybe they trigger the same parts in the brain so it is like you're losing an actual child. I don't think its worth it. I was more or less forced to by my empathy to get this one but its not worth to actively seek pet ownership.

It will comfort you to know that not everyone is completely catshit insane and by the time they are ten or so most children have at least a basic understanding of death and loss

Hope you can get better op sorry about the cat

what the fuck is that supposed to mean? You can understand death and still being affected by it. Imagine trying to look for apartments and your childhood cat dying at the same time. Or having to study for the high-school test so your GPA won't get fucked and be reduced to a lower caste indefinitely

I'm sorry bro. I'm dealing with the death of my father right now. Not making this a competition, just stating that I too and in deep grief and can well sympathize with the feelings of helplessness, a loved one is a loved one and it's very hard to lose them, especially when uncertainty is involved.

Coward. The same can be said of any relationship, anything positive in life. Shield a child and you get a monster. Grief teaches kids to be humble and empathetic.

Two obvious facts

Death is part of life. Humans need to eat corpses for their bodies to grow and function properly. Everyone born today will live to see their predecessors die.

Cats are relatively weak animals that get killed whenever they leave a 30ft radius of your back door and not keeping them indoors is basically killing them

In synthesis a cat is the perfect pet for a kid

My cat was an indoor and outdoor cat at his choice and lived till he died of old age.

One of our outdoor cats was hit by a car and got brain damage.

they're still worth it... the final moments hit like a truck but the lifetime of joy they brought before that is invaluable

your situation sounds very rough, and it's easy to catastrophize the worst case but ultimately you don't know until you know so try to balance that

do all the meme shit people say to do like leave out a scented thing or whatever idk if that even works

one of my old cats was missing for like a month until one night we heard it meowing out front of the house in a rain storm... good luck to you and ur tuxedo cat

the problem is, pets are forever fragile. Humans not so much. Human babies are only fragile for a while. With pets, it will be like taking care of a 3 year old from beginning to end. One fuck up in 15 years is all it takes and then you'll blame yourself.
Not only that, pets are considered property under every jurisdiction. In the eyes of the law they're as valuable as your PS5. As a result, noone outside of yourself gives a fuck about what happens to them. A neighbor can steal or even kill your pet in broad daylight and all you'll be able to do is sue him in civil court for the value of the pet. Companies peddle poison as food or meds over the counter and noone cares. Your pet ever gets out, 99% of people won't even bother to look at it. Where I'm at it's even worse because we have a stray roam policy so they'll just assume it's a stray.

it's a kill. On the road.

Starting to think the numerous "my cat died/got out" threads the past couple months are falseflags
>>
>>5146225
what would be the purpose of that
>>
>>5146102
I understand that. My cat died in 2018 and I got into a depression that lasted months. While I feel better about her death, the other day I saw some photos of her and I still cried. The damage was enormous to me.
I have a different cat now but I try not to get too attached to her to prevent myself from feeling the same way in the future.

your dad is right, you worry too much. just because your cat is having fun outside, which is where cats usually live and have survived for billions of years, it doesnt mean he's dead or suffering or whatever. cats are clever and resourceful. maybe he'll come back, maybe he likes it better living free rather than be confined in your house. maybe some kid found him and kept him.

That's just an issue of living in india. Civilized countries don't have this problem.

Its a conspiracy theory from a local schizophrenic who thinks eglin air force base is trying to trap all cats in saturnalian cube prisons to kill bastet before she eats the jewish mouse god and give anubis the power to conquer russia or some bullshit like that. They’re clearly lying to us about outdoor cats dying to make us sacrifice their sophian spark and gonads to saturn so we must never neuter cats or keep them inside! (Yes that is fucking retarded)

In reality cats are middle of the food chain animals nerfed by over 10,000 years of selective breeding for docility and cuteness. Irresponsible fucks and those odd morons who think they own small tigers are quick to get their pets killed. /an/ is a common place for people to vent about dead and dying pets.

This does vary by region.

Housecats were originally domesticated in the levant. Dogs are not native to the levant and generally disliked by the cultures there so there’s not much to eat the cats, life is scarce, and there is little refuge for animals besides peoples stone buildings. In these conditions cats do ok outside and actually do keep rodents away from peoples shit because the rodents arent digging in when everything is sand and rocks. If you are israeli, your cat will probably do fine outdoors.

If you’re not a desert fuck and live in a lusher region like europe or north america cats can not get rid of rodents and just become another part of the food chain while disproportionately harming some rare, slow breeding animals that never evolved to deal with a large, practically infinite supply of cats courtesy of humans releasing them. You’re also living in a dog culture because dogs are just better adapted to regions like that and have been with europeans as pets since they were aryan steppe nomads.
