Why haven't we domesticated deer?
Do we need to have this thread every couple of days now? Like I said last time, we have. They've been domesticated for millennia. What do you think reindeer are?
Why haven't we domesticated deer except for rendeer?
heh
Let's talk about deer.
>>5146764>>5146768The main reason is that people domesticated three other ruminants first (cattle, sheep, goats) and between those three there wasn't really a niche for raising most deer as well. Pretty much any food a deer can eat could also be eaten by those other ruminants. And most deer species are a pain to keep captive, due to how high they can jump; keeping them penned before cheap barbed wire would have been expensive. The one deer species that was properly domesticated (reindeer) is larger and easier to keep contained than most other deer, and do have a clear advantage in very cold environments over the cattle/sheep/goat trio, giving them a useful niche. Now that deer are being raised in captivity (viable since new tech like barbed & electric wire make keeping them penned cost effective, and markets have enough demand for non-standard meats that hunting wild game can't reliably supply) I expect them to be domesticated in a couple hundred years.
>>5146778Fun fact: reindeer cannot eat carrots because they lack top teeth. They can only eat soft grasses and leaves.
>>5146764We have with Reindeer>ok but why not other deerDeer were historically hard to contain as they can leap over tall fences. They're also susceptible to capture myopathy, where extreme stress can cause muscle damage and lead to death. So even if you manage to contain a deer it might die simply from the stress after being caught

deer are cute i like looking at them :-D
>>5147351me too
I dunno, not meaty enough?
>>5147429dont talk about deer like food nigga! you gon make me mad!
>>5147430What else am I gonna think of them?
>>5147431That theyre cute curious, free spirited animals that will sometimes do weird and interesting things, while having big eyes and being cute
>>5146764Don't know, but I just saw three deer eating a bush across the street from me
>>5147589cool ive never seen deer irl even tho theyre my favourite animal
>>5146764I was under the impression that we have already. So, where does venison come from?
>>5146789That's not true thoAll deer species lack upper incisors. To eat tougher food they just move it to the back of their mouth and grind it with their molarshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK_GhwZB15c
I feel like deers need a bigger tail, look at this stubby
>>5147638whitetails have evolved oddly long tails, i dont think deer generally are supposed to have long tails tho, most dont
>>5147592What kind of a horrible concrete shithole do you live in?
>>5147642nta but could be Africa or Australia, they don't have them there
https://youtube.com/shorts/JTDhp2xJD9kbeautiful creatures
>>5146764Too many STDs
>>5146781>>5146768>>5147167Herd structure also works against them. It's not as tight as sheep, making the previously mentioned penning issue even more painful. Sheep are both easier to contain, and easier to manage when not in containment. You can breed a trait like not dying of stress while barely thinking about it, even being docile is easy enough, but fundamentally changing herd dynamics would be hard to even get started on.
>>5149036kill yourself sexualizing subhuman
>>5147627They cannot eat raw, whole carrots. Those carrots are floppy, meaning they've likely been cooked.
>>5149036based deerchad
>>5149036live yourself sexualizing übermensch
>>5149064It's floppy because it's a slice. The second carrot is clearly raw and it eats it just fine
