Humans are predisposed to freak out when something looks really close to something they should relate to (other humans, babies, things that are cute and fluffy) but looks off or sickly somehow. This isnt exclusive to humans, monkeys will kill their own children or abandon them if theyre hybrids between close breeds of their face is a bit too ugly, birds wont feed the weaker looking chics, a lot of animals do similarly. It got selected because its a way, albeit fucked up, to stop deformed, sick and defective spawn from taking resources and breeding further. This ends translating to other species if it looks somehow "gross" or "off" yet still looks cute in some way humans should like (a featherles bird or those meat bean kangaroo babies as opposed to the fluffier and furrier state they get into a few months later). A current equivalent would be gay autists like you being left alone and your parents not lking you, your deformed makes people instinctively angry and thus you get purged from the gene pool just like the animal that comes off
