My hedgehog will scratch, not himself, but the inside of his pouch to get my or my fiance's attention. He does big deep scratchings of the inside of his pouch with his right paw if he wants me to hold him or light scratchings with his left paw if he wants her to hold him.

He does this when he wants cuddles or pets and especially if there is a thunderstorm or fireworks (4th of july or new years). When it's a storm or fireworks he always scratches for me. Our previous hedgehogs have done this as well.

At first we didn't understand it. Hedgehogs aren't known (as far as we knew) to be affectionate or demand cuddles and pets the way other pets do. But all three of them have done this again and again. We tested it in various ways as well. Here's how we tested it.

1. Switching the person holding our hedgehog. If the wrong person holds our hedgie, they will scratch more and more frantically until the right person is holding them and petting them. We tried variations of this, but the result was always the same. Deep right paw scratches for "Daddy", light left paw scratches for "mommy". Every. Single. Time.

2. We tried ignoring it. The scratching becomes more and more frantic until they get the person they want.

Each hedgehog we have had has done this. So maybe it's an instinctive thing leftover from when they were little hoglets calling out for their parents?

Our most recent hedgehog is a bit more vocal. If he wants my attention and I'm not paying attention he will make a sharp, singular bark that sounds more like a duck quack than a bark to get my attention. He has done this when he wants back in his cage for food or water or when he wants me to notice something he is doing. He rarely does this, but when he does it's specifically me he's calling for.

We know this because he will immediately (as soon as he sees me coming) crawl into his pouch and start scratching for "Daddy" until I pick him up.

Welcome to my blog.

What weird things have you seen hedgies do?

How so?

I would say neglected, but neglect IS a form of abuse, so I'll concede that as truth. However, what do you mean exactly?
