Why are we as a society so behind on this fact?
You're taking an animal out of it's cruel and harsh natural environment and making it live life on easy mode. You're effectively a slave because you're responsible for it's wellbeing now.
Every reason against pet ownership you overcome with no tangible payment for yourself is proof this is out of a sense of kindness.

The top 3 reasons against owning a pet all have to do with things integrale to living and thriving in life. Reasons that if you ignore, a pet would be an active detriment to your way of life.
Why do you force yourself to have an animal? It's completely pointless in the grand scheme of things.
All pets do is combat the health effects of loneliness and social isolation. Nearly anything can replace that. Exercise, and human-human connection accomplish the same goal, if not better.

We are the masters of the earth, and it is our duty as the ruling species to dominate and rein over the other species that walk among us with kindness.

But remember, the natural environment for a dog is not only with a human, but anywhere and everywhere you can feral packs of dogs or dingos not living off of humans. They were bred alongside humans, but not to require humans to take care of them. Dingos are living proof of this fact of life.
And quite frankly, dogs in all actually are just barely brood symbionts. Feeding off of a host and draining their resources, while offering only a crumb of service on rare occasions.
